View Full Version : What’s more important to the NBA, money or lives?

The 2020 Olympics have been cancelled due to concerns for the lives of all athletes and participants involved. It was the right thing to do. Will the NBA do the right thing? Or will the league succumb to greed and put thousands of lives in danger in this pandemic?
Think of all the legal ramifications that could happen. A player could sue the league for putting them in a hostile or life threatening work environment. A coach or broadcaster could catch it and die. NBA stands to lose millions. There was talk of letting players play on cruise ships. The very ones that have the virus that has killed countless people. Just think of how desperate the NBA is if they’re discussing such ludicrous ideas.
I hope the NBA does the right thing and cancel the 2020 season. Wait until this passes and start over next year. A wise man once said, Sometimes you have to take two steps back to take one step forward.

If we're serious about human life we should ban any thread or posts insisting we should start games without the recommendations of the CDC, Dr. Anthony Fauci, WHO and the experts in the field. We need to come to grips with the reality that lives are at stake and speculation about a game resuming this season insults the victims and people suffering this terrible virus.

The concern from who? Is the NBA supposed to be doing something to get Phil the shelf stocker his job back at a store in Alabama?
No doubt any NBA players in a game would be tested. What are we saying is the threat of known healthy people playing basketball?
The reason the general public shouldnt is not knowing who might be sick because not everyone shows it. If 10 guys are tested.....why does it matter what they do in an arena without fans after everyone else is tested too?
How many people do you think it takes to get the lights, power outlets, and AC on in a gym which would be just about all you need to play a game with no fans?
The only issue would be if the tests arent as accurate as we would like.
Im sure the NBA has the resources to get a skeleton crew in a single building tested and keep them isolated for a game.
They do not have the resources to get Joe Sixpack his job back in Alaska.

Im not necessarily saying the NBA should be more concerned with average people going back to work. Even though Silver could come out and say, the world has far greater problems right now than the professional basketball season being cancelled. Im saying AVERAGE PEOPLE should be more concerned with joe six pack going back to work.

I don’t even know what you are saying bruh? Lol.
What I’m saying is when you have an unprecedented situation like this with a lot of people out of work the public concern should not be geared toward how we can orchestrate salvaging an NBA season in empty arenas. IMO it’s not a good look. Let’s just get everything back to normal first and then the entertainment industry can come back.

Most of the coaching staff and broadcasting crew are age 50 and above. No one wants to watch a players only game. The last time they tried that it sucked balls. We all turned off the TV.

Maybe so but all i was saying is it could be done with little threat if they wanted to. Im sure almost every team has someone on the coaching staff thats under 50. Im sure they coukd find broadcasting crew members under 50 also.
I agree it would be weird but im not so sure people wouldn't watch. Especially it being playoffs. Everyone i know is at the end of the netflix and youtube rabbit whole. People would take anything right now

That’s like saying since cancer exists why is any money going towards fixing torn acls better.
Humanity can do more than one thing. You can’t all focus on one thing. There comes a saturation point. People aren’t out of line to want to keep their business doing well till this all ends even if that business is entertainment....which for the record...employs an awful lot of people who also want to get back to work.
One of my best friends is one of the little people on movie sets. Occasional extra. Gofer. Has not had work in weeks. The majority of people in entertainment are not the people getting 20 million. It’s mostly the support staff.
There is nothing wrong with trying to get up and running safely. A lot of the people out of work would be among those watching the nba if they could. I know plenty of people who want sports back in some form. Not tycoons. Normal up the street Americans. And it’s fine. You don’t take anything from the worldwide effort because you play tested safe basketball and it’s put on tv.

This is not a normal situation so stop comparing it to the other woes of the world. The government has FORCED businesses to close. Theoretically other businesses too could just test their employees and customers and get business back up and running, but it is not practical and the state will not let it happen. What is wrong with the NBA waiting this thing out right along with the rest of us?

Rest of who?
Ive been working 12-15 hours a day 6 days a week. I’m not up 3:30-4am every day like now because I don’t like sleep. I’m up because I work all the time. The only change to my life has been going out even more. I’m headed to work now and I’m likely to be there past 8pm. The world is not frozen despite the endless social media posts about people stuck at home.
The NBA playing a game would likely be among the safest gatherings of people in America right now. How many non governmental groups of 2 dozen people would be tested and known to be safe in the same room at the same time?
At that point it’s just a basketball game. With millions of people wanting to see it.
You ask what’s the harm as if that isn’t the question both ways.
What do healthy tested people hurt by playing a basketball game? Someone’s feelings?

We have never experienced this largely internet driven reaction because media didn’t exist in its modern form....but considerably worse things have happened and will continue. The plague? Really?
If you had the plague I suspect you wouldn’t make such a comparison. Even treated with modern medicine the plague would be almost 50 times more likely to kill you than this. This country right now is full of you dramatic douchebags walking around wearing trash bags, misusing gloves, derailing trains, shooting people over toilet paper, and taking all the day to day supplies the elderly can’t get to in time.
The people out here in a panic are the problem not the ones like me. I’m not bothering a soul. I’m not hoarding. I’m going to work then mostly going home.
And you could add a lot more to that “mostly” if there were nba games on.
Fear and the human proclivity to be a scumbag when stressed is as big a problem as the disease. The supply lines being so hit by doom sayers creates half the problem. You only have unusually giant groups of people in supermarkets because they fear not having enough _____ because the jerks will buy it all for no reason.
As usual humans themselves are the biggest threat to humanity. At least when dealing with something relatively minor like this.
Let smallpox get out. That will be a bigger threat than other people. This?
This will likely be a 3 line explanation for a stock market crash in the future.

California may be different homie it’s ghost towns out here. Completely shut down. I’m happy that you still have work.
I’m in the camp that wants normalcy first. I don’t want a circus freak show rushed chaotic event with no fans. You do. You even made a thread about it. You want basketball back just to see what happens in this wild scenario for your own amusement. I would rather the NBA practice patience. The likes of which millions of small business owners and employees are doing in my state. Once we get everyone back to work, families settled down and safe, then we can enjoy basketball again. Hard for me personally to enjoy it with a pandemic and state wide shutdown going on.

Kblaze explain to me what you really get from watching a basketball game at this point i time?
Fans aside....the exact same thing I always got.
You think I didn’t enjoy basketball when 750 million people got the swine flu in 09 and it killed 600,000? The world is always going through something. Something from nature or from our own doing. War. Famine. Disease. When I learned more about malaria it got to me a bit so I sent money to provide mosquito netting. A small but reasonable thing I could do. It kills half a million people a year. I can’t stop it. I can acknowledge it and chip in a drop in the bucket and live my life.
This is similar. Only it’s in the “first” world too where important people get it....and then mostly get better.
Forgive me for still enjoying the little things. A good game. A nice meal. Went to Texas Roadhouse for a pickup a few days ago and cars were wrapped around the building for those mediocre ass steaks. People get to enjoy the little distractions even when *gasp* not just brown people are sick.
Let 20 times this number of Brazilians and Nigerians get sick with a disease that stays over there. A lot of the moralizing stops. We would get a benefit concert of B listers plus U2 to play a special we wouldn’t watch.
Humanity is dealing with real shit. Like always. It’s no realer than usual. It’s closer and we choose to care this time largely due to media and the internet driving fear.
I assure you I maintain a healthy fear of disease. Like I said....if small pox gets out....shut it all down. Close the grocery stores. **** it. Get the national guard on the streets to hand out supplies and shoot the idiots risking the future to get out of the house.
This?
This is normal human shit being reacted to differently because it’s hurting people above the equator too and we all have social media and cable news.
Im sorry....but I don’t feel like a jerk for still liking pretty girls and jump shots.

Hey I’m down to open the whole world back up right now. I’m not tripping. It is all the in between/half way BS that is becoming annoying. If the nba can figure out how to resume their season then the rest of world should be able to figure out how to get everyone else back to work too. And If the whole world can be patient and wait this thing thru then the NBA can wait too.
Why do you assume the NBA resuming and the whole world going back to work are two equivalent things? If games were to theoretically resume with no fans, including players, coaches, refs, medical staff, you're looking at around 500 people needed for the NBA to resume operations, a number that roughly gets cut in half if they start with just the playoffs. How can you compare that to restaurants, hotels, airlines, schools, among countless other industries that employ literally millions of people? If the NBA were able to resume operations before other industries opened, why shouldn't they be allowed to continue the season?

What exactly do the two things have to do with each other?
Go to a Lowe’s or Home Depot right now. 20 times the people needed for an nba game are in there and half of them are a couple feet apart at the front. Almost none of them tested. Most buying bullshit.
Explain to me the harm of a fraction of that number....all tested....playing a game to entertain tens of millions looking for a distraction.
Please tell me the tangible harm. Give me an issue other than your feelings which are obviously countered by millions on the other side.

The problem is basketball is a full contact sport. All it takes is one person who has it and then it spreads. Everyone touches the same ball. Players bleed every game. Tests can be false positive or negative. Not worth someone dying over because the NBA needs a few more millions to add to it's pockets.
It's not practical to test players hundreds of times. There aren't even enough tests for us normal citizens. Nor is it practical to confine a large group of people to a room and expect them to not make contact with outsiders. All it takes is one and this whole thing blows up again.

It isn’t a zombie apocalypse. It “blowing up” is a name scrolling across sports center and then nothing happening worth reporting. Your “It’s not worth someone dying” argument is a baseless fear. As long as people are in stores by the millions every day, still in liquor stores, factories, construction and any number of things getting tens of millions of people out and about every day that isn’t really needed the “threat” of tested people playing basketball on tv is negligible relative to every day society. This will never reach a point nobody has it. It isn’t something you get to zero or near zero like small pox. Till the day you die someone will potentially have it. People still have polio.
There is some risk of this and much worse diseases starting up every day. Being afraid of the few people who we know do get tests because of potential false negatives is just fear mongering.
An nba game under the conditions one would be played right now would be about the highest ratio of known tested healthy people in any building in America right now. You would be a hell of a lot better off at an nba game without fans than you would be touching the door handle of an auto zone. And I’m sitting across the street from one that is open right now.
There’s a lot of shit to shut down as far as risk factor to public health before you get to an nba game without fans.
And that’s not even counting the many other ways people kill themselves and others in the name of personal freedom. But we aren’t allowed to talk about smoking or drunk driving right now. Only people killed by the specific disease in question merit the endless “But how is it worth the riiiiiisk?” crybaby bullshit about saving society from deadly things nobody really needs.

One small business could test its employees and about 20 of their customers/clients and get back to work. But the government isn’t allowing that so why should it let the NBA?

Government needs a reason to strip its citizens of freedom not a reason not to. Any reason for liquor stores to be considered essential business other than people being annoyed if you didn’t? Why can you still buy flowers? Maybe a garden supply store needs to be open in case someone grows food.... but flowers? In stores with hundreds of employees and thousands of visitors?
As I said....the nba is way down the list of potential public dangers.
Besides this is a state issue not federal. 10th amendment situation. And not all states are locked down. They wouldn’t be doing the travel. They would be in some single place.
The nba playing games would pose less of a public health risk than the garden department at a single Walmart. You should see Greens liquor store here. More people in there in an hour than would have to be in an entire arena to play an nba game.

Exactly. The fact corporate ass Lowe’s gets to be open while all these other small businesses have to be closed is what’s wack. The picking and choosing of who can stay open and what kind of business can go on is bullshit. Some small businesses could use the same precautions the NBA is trying to use, but the state isn’t going to let it happen, so why should it let the NBA? Either we are all in this quarantine together or we are not.
I think we agree but the difference is I just wanna see everything open back up completely fans in the stadium and all. Not half way crap with no fans and the world around us still shitty.

You make a good point. I think PR is a big part of it. Basketball is showbiz. Consider the Dark Knight Rises theater shooting in Colorado. After that the studio cancelled several screenings and networks stopped showing ads for the movie. It doesn't make sense does it? Optics is everything. They certainly could go to a remote location and create an NBA base camp where in all the players and essential staff live and play. But it is highly likely with how contagious this thing as well as the hidden incubation period where tests will come out with false negatives that covid enters the area. At that point there's a good chance some people start getting seriously ill and possibly die. That's a bad look. This is the type of stuff that can really put a dent in the brand that would lead to huge financial losses.
Second point, although I feel the financial losses probably offset this thinking to some extent, is that teams and players themselves are worried of getting the virus. They wouldn't want to play when they know that this thing spreads like wildfire if just 1 person has it and can have long term effects on heart and lung function. Some players aren't even allowed to ski or ride a motorbike because its too risky. These are valuable assets.

You are hung up on what they “let” happen. The nba is a few dozen billionaires(teams have part owners) and a few hundred millionaires....all in league with international broadcasters. If the government specifically told the nba they couldn’t play they could fly them all to Toronto and play there. Or Anywhere really.
If the players want to play(key issue) they can make it work. The nba isn’t Crazy Joe Shoe shiners. They are multinational tycoons.
They are not governed by local decisions the way a single brick and mortar facility is. ESPN and TNT would broadcast games from panama if they had to. You can’t compare the nba to a business some mayor could shut down.
It won’t come to such extreme measures I’m just saying....we aren’t talking about what’s “allowed” really.
They just need a gym on this planet. Not anyone’s permission really.
The nuggets owner owns more of America by square footage than the smallest state. And his wife is the daughter of the founder of Walmart. And he’s not the richest owner. Or second richest. Try to get your mind around the resources available to these people and decide if anyone really has to “let” them play a game and get it on tv.

And my original comment in this thread was that IMO it is not a “good look” for the NBA to try and come back before average people go back to work. It reeks of billionaires forcing things thru with special privilege and resources the public just doesn’t have. That was my whole point. Lol. But hey that’s just my opinion.

The average people you are concerned about....for the most part...are bored. You’re arguing on behalf of people who want sports back. The people who don’t mostly didn’t care to begin with. None of which factors in the many many millions of people working and going on as usual.
My neighbor is having a small cookout as we speak. Not a big gathering but his usual little crew. I assume it would be different if my state(South Carolina) joined yours in a panic and tried to make everyone stay home...but it wouldn’t do much for me.
My job has a nice little essential worker form for me. I’m working no matter what. And most of my friends too.

My business is shut down, and the fear mongering going on out here about how contagious this shit is would prevent me from even going to my folks house and enjoying a game with my dad. I always watch basketball with my dad, but until things come back to normal that’s not happening. I guess we live in 2 different America’s right now.

The NBA is not above the law. Canada has already closed it's borders. What you're suggesting isn't even possibile. What's next? Fly them into the China Sea and have them play on a cruise ship? C'Mon man. NBA reeks of desperation. Just cancel the season and take the L. CBA already tried resuming the season and the Chinese government cracked the whip on them after public backlash.

Well, you're in South Carolina. Far from any trouble. I have roots in the tri-state area. It's pretty chaotic in NYC from what I'm hearing. The NBA fans from there aren't even thinking about the NBA. They're more upset that they're taking hoops down from parks. And your essential worker form won't mean shit if the govt feels like it. What's deemed essential seems to change every 24h.
It's why I've said in my non-expert opinion they should be handling this thing differently in diff areas depending on severity. Especially urban vs rural.

I don’t think I’d be out of work no matter what. Not that I want to be. I’d be paid the same either way. The only thing this will hurt is my bonus. I don’t have anyone in New York anymore. The friends I knew there moved near Philly so I have no direct reports on what’s happening up there so I won’t speak on it. It’s obviously worse than here though.
We really are mostly chilling. Seems the only things fully closed are the mall and Chinese restaurants. I swear I can’t find a single hood style Chinese spot open. Only the corporate ones like PF Chang’s and Panda Express. I want some good grease not changed often hood Chinese food.
Thats about all I’ve been missing. Well the gym too. That annoyed me but I get it. If anywhere would spread it....that would be it. I’m not against common sense measures like that. Be safe. Be reasonable. I’ve not visited my mom since she’s old and has a weaker immune system from previous chemo(she’s long recovered if you care). The nba wouldn’t be a threat to much if they chose to play. I don’t think they will in the end since I think the madness will last a month or two too long. But they wouldn’t be anywhere near the top of the dangerous non essential list.
Im wondering why common sense shit like propping open doors so nobody has to touch handles isn’t being done more. We really worried about the ac costs right now? Not even that hot yet.
Entertainment is doing a pretty important job right now though.
Seriously. End streaming for 3 days right now. See how many people come back outside. Netflix is using more data than ever. Tv is helping a lot really. I’m wondering what that Jordan special ratings will be.

https://sports.yahoo.com/nba-players-union-concerns-playing-010014386.html
As expected, some NBA players are already voicing their concerns about being placed in danger. With loss of pay already and no bonus to playing at this point, just a matter of time before the NBPA union lawsuits come.
There's little incentive for an NBA player to put himself and his family at risk. Especially when they'd be making pennies compared to what they were getting before with actual fans at the games. NBA just looks illusioned and desperate at this point.
