Ummm that game is from 1988. Boston was the 7th worst ranked defense in the league that season. MJ torched them all year.

I think OP is talking about the 4 and 5-defender strongsides that existed due to the lack of weakside spacing - with no corner shooter on the weakside like today's game, previous era defenders weren't pulled to the weakside and could remain closer to the strongside..

of course, with the lack of weakside spacing leaving defenders on the strongside, there was no need to strongside flood (defenders were already on the strongside) - today's weakside spacing necessitates strongside flood

So if you watch those highlights, notice how many times MJ is navigating 4 and 5 defender strongsides, something unseen in today's spaced out game and weakside spacing..

the lack of spacing in MJ's day neccessitated expert in-traffic mid-range shooting - that was the standard back then, aka today's most feared/unstoppable/clutch shot and exotic skillset (contested mid-range) was the standard back then.. i.e. Kawhi might make 3 or 4 mid-range shots per game and people nod in approval at the difficulty, but MJ scored 37 a game that way
