most NBA players in the league were idolized by Jordan propaganda growing up, he was the only star heavily marketed
10 years from now that poll will change
10 years after that the poll will change again
admiring your fav childhood athlete is a generational standard, which is why you see most young rookies now ranking Lebron above the rest
I wonder who was in that 1.7% who voted for Kareem. That or those players either are big men or have taken time to study the history of the game.

Its gonna change but now how u think. Lebron will drop a few places once hes not relevant anymore. Its hapoened to almost every great other than mj and maybe kareem. Remember when kobe was around his pesk scoring 80 points and scoring consecutive 40 point games there was a debate if kobe was better than mj. Once he got hurt and declined and eventually retired that debate was over. Kobe went from maybe being better than mj to not even in the top 5. Same thing will happen to bron. His 3 chips and many finals loses wont hold up like u think it will.

That poll just shows most current players have no more knowledge of the game or it's history than casual fans do. The 3 most popular players getting 95% of the vote, fcking Iverson & Durant getting votes for GOAT :lol

Yup in 10 years Lebron will be around top 20
10 years after maybe maybe top 30.
Unfortunately for Lebron, many years down the road young player just won't idolize him as much as other players since Lebron skillset is really limited.
I guess they could try to copy his flopping and teaming up, but other than that not sure what else Lebron is really good at :confusedshrug:
20 years into the future Jordan will most likely still be argued as the Goat, whereas Lebron will be remembered along side with others greats such as West, Baylor, etc

Nobody playing today( asides from Vince on his way out) would be old enough to have experienced enough MJ to idolize him like that. Your 30 year old superstars like KD and Harden would have been like 8-10 when MJ retired from the Bulls in 98. Guys in that age would have mostly come up on Kobe in terms of marketing and exposure. Lebron would be for your guys like Trae Young, Luka, up to Giannis ie early to mid 20s. 98% of the league didn't grow up with MJ.

Exactly. Iverson is the giveaway. Sorry, if you have Iverson in your top 10 let alone your top 5 you can't be taken seriously.
[QUOTEYour 30 year old superstars like KD and Harden would have been like 8-10 when MJ retired from the Bulls in 98. Guys in that age would have mostly come up on Kobe in terms of marketing and exposure[/QUOTE]
8-10 is still old enough to form impressions but I take your point. The thing is the people who dominate the media are people who either covered MJ or grew up MJ. So if you are KD or Harden turning on the television in 2005 you are hearing how MJ is the clear GOAT, etc. MJ cemented his edge in the 2000s. Shaq never got GOAT hype, Kobe was a sidekick for several years, and LeBron didn't arrive as a superstar until 2006.
MJ still was heavily marketed in the 2000s and still is. His commercials are less common but it's not like MJ disappeared from the spotlight in 1998 the way Kareem did when he retired. When is the last time you watched a sports talk show and they didn't mention MJ?

True. I guess I'm thinking that from an 'idolization' standpoint hearing about MJ in retrospect wouldn't have the same effect as actually having grown up with him. Like ok, with Kobe around 2006 when he was doing the solo act, guys like KD would be 18. Your really young guys like Luka? MJ would be as much a 'folklore' player as guys like Oscar and Wilt would have been for people who started watching the NBA in the 80s.

Again, it's wishful thinking. Jordans been retired for over 2 decades now. Still considered the consensus GOAT. At some point that opinion will change, but it's wishful thinking at best believing it'll be 10 years and it's doubtful it'll be LeBron that overtakes him as you're hoping

I have Kareem at no.2 ... his career is kind of strange in that he really didn't win the bulk of his championships until he was past his individual prime. He never won an MVP after 79-80, where the bulk of the Laker championships happened (Magic won several though).

But Shaq wasn't revered though. Big men, especially one as genetically gifted as he was, are so much larger than life that kids on the playground don't visualize being him.
The most popular players in history have always been your flashy perimeter guys. Dr. J, Magic, MJ, Kobe, Lebron and so forth. Fans are attracted to high flying dunks, acrobatic layouts and no look passes, not a snarling 350 pounder trying to break the backboard on every dunk. Shaq had charisma but his game and stature wasn't marketable to the common fan. Kobe was the more popular between the two of them in terms of attracting a legion of supporters. Same with Penny in Orlando and Wade in Miami.

Many people who love MJ aren’t even old enough to have really watched him.
People who really watched MJ are close to 50 at the YOUNGEST. What you see in the NBA poll is a combination of media marketing and nostalgia, because literally nobody in the NBA is even close to 50 years old. The oldest player in the NBA was only 14 when MJ won his first title.

Stop with that "bbbbuuttt they're only like 3 years of age that time" Heck even that reasoning would have led them to choose LeQuit but they didn't because he isn't really that good and his chips came from forming superteams only.
Since when did a tards' opinion who are hiding in front of their computers hold more weight than the actual group of people who are actually playing the game?
Even Kobe is trailing only with like 1.3 points than LeCallaFriend :oldlol: and that's a player who most of the user here are ranking 9th-11th on the goat list against LeQuit fans who are dreaming that LeQuit is #1 :oldlol:
