View Full Version : Most underrated movies ever

What do you think are some of the most underrated movies of all time?

The movies nobody else seems to show much love for that you think were great.

And that random movie you saw that other people should have caught too, but didn't.

If you're naming a bunch, maybe separate them into categories, like drama, comedy, etc.

I thought the Star Wars prequels were better than most people typically say they are. They are not as good as the original trilogy but light years better than the trash Kathleen Kennedy has put out the last few years.

Underrated comedy: Not Another Teen Movie.

Underrated drama: Memento. But, it wasn't particularly "underrated," it got good reviews, but then I never saw it again anywhere. Never seen it on TV, don't think it's ever been on Netflix. Saw it once and then never heard of it again. But I remember it was good.

Blindspotting. 2018 was a great year and it was my #2. I somehow only just saw Sorry To Bother You last night (would rather not discuss my feelings here), but especially with it getting so much hype...I can only assume it's because not enough saw Blindspotting...which I think is an actual masterpiece.

Andrei Rublev is underrated in what sense? Late Spring? Not as a criticism of the films, at all, but how do you mean? Among this forum? LoL that would be too hopeful.

Brick by Rian Johnson is a movie that predates his becoming a big star director, but Knives Out, that he did last year, and was superb, really comes out of that vain more than his pop stuff.

It's an interesting take where it's like a classic film noir but set in a high school. It's from 2005 I think, so figure it as a young Joseph Gordon Levitt playing a high school version of Jack Nickelson's JJ Gittes from Chinatown.

https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commonsensemedia.org%2Fmovie-reviews%2Fbrick&psig=AOvVaw2oWKo22GK5JsJlIenPl7dw&ust=1589041493360000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CAIQjRxqFwoTCPDWhZfXpOkCFQAAAAAdAAAAABAII know some people who find it a little too weird, but I like how he sort of goes for it (like the way it feels like the theatre department is across town). It's got some warts, Lucas Haas I'm not super fond of. But it's a really interesting watch.

It's not available for free through any of the mainstream formats that I can find. You can rent or buy it on Amazon.

Why You're Wrong About BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE (2016) - A Video Essay

MARTHAA!!!!!!

This fight was bigger than King Kong vs Godzilla and Batman still won the fight... That's all I wanted out of this movie: a winner. Batman won.

He could've easily ended SuperMan's world with that kryptonite spear. But yea, that Martha scene was like wtf... why?

The fight with Doomsday didn't bother me that much either... and if you can ignore the Justice League movies, their appearances in this film did not kill it. (unfortunately you do have to ignore the Justice League sequel was ever made).

Lex unfortunately did come close to ruining this movie... but I was able to fight through that part. If they had gotten Lex Luther right.... could've had gold.

idk... I think the movie is a piece of Art, but I'm clearly in the minority.

i think the angle of superman being hunted for his "inadvertent destruction" is a great angle that should have been explored more but maybe it would have made for a more boring movie. i mean it is a comic book movie and is formatted just like a crossover comic

like how people are protesting the lockdowns now... that is the superman protests in a nutshell

rated way too high.

it's deserving of a 7.8, a full IMDB star... maybe 1.2... I say it's underrated.

Cinderella Man is an 8.0 on IMDB, which would be tied for the top 216, but should probably be ranked up there with The Shawshank Redemption.

but considering there are only 4 films with a 9 or higher, we will give it a 8.4 on the IMDB scale. 0.4 stars higher than there where it currently is.

7 years is basically a death sentence for a white boy like him... that's one of the main points of the film. Some people aren't built for prison.

Lol. No it isn’t. Dude would go in there find some other white boys to chill with, do his measly sentence, and be back free on the street in no time. 7 years a death sentence? Lmao. Dude, there are several scenes with him describing what it will be like in prison... it was one of the main focal points of the film.

His life was over... you get your ass kicked everyday, probably raped, and lucky to survive in one piece.

What don’t you get about what I’m saying? That’s my point. He’s a bitch. And they are over hyping prison. If this dude could be some kingpin running with the Russian mafia and selling drugs to degenerates on the streets of NYC of all places he could do his little prison term. Lol. His life is nowhere near from over. That’s what makes the movie fake as shit. He would have contacts in there thru his Russian homies and probably be respected for not snitching. 7 years would go by in the blink of an eye.

yea, I see what you are saying... but he wasn't a "hard" drug dealer... he was just in it for the money and was pretty smart about it up until Goose snitched on him. He wasn't gangster, just had a few gangster connections.

Worm from Rounders was able to hang in prison, however it's a different story for Monty... but yea I agree, they probably could've made that prison sentence a little longer... like 12 years.

Edward Norton did a few years in prison in American History X... didn't work out very well for him in that movie.

Worm from Rounders was able to hang in prison, however it's a different story for Monty... but yea I agree, they probably could've made that prison sentence a little longer... like 12 years.

Edward Norton did a few years in prison in American History X... didn't work out very well for him in that movie.

I always felt the prison sentence in American History X was a little suspect too. What was it like 3 years for brutally murdering some dude hate crime status? Lol.

Where Monty in 25th hour would have problems is if inmates ever found out he was a lightweight chomo who trolled schoolyards to pick up on underage chicks.

$hit, I didn't know James Cameron wrote the story and the screenplay for Strange Days. He also was the Producer.

That must be the reason why I thought the film was underrated. It's a solid movie. Not great, but definitely solid.

I haven't looked at James Cameron's IMDB stats yet:

10 = Will never happen

9 = Epic Masterpiece (only 4 films in existence)
8 = Masterpiece
7.5 = Great

MFer is apparently making 4 more Avatar films, so it will be his legacy... I thought the visuals on Avatar were good enough to overcome it's flaws. That's the type of movie you have to see 3-D in theaters.

I mean, The visuals weren't flawless throughout the entire film... but they were pretty damn good in some scenes. Kind of on the same level with LOTR if you ask me... but LOTR had the better story.

I saw Strange Days at the theater when it came out...I felt really let down, thought it was awful...I can't think of any redeeming qualities of that movie. Guy spends the whole movie chasing a girl around who doesn't care about him, the surprise villain was terrible, felt like the movie was just going for atmosphere. I'm surprised Cameron had anything to do with that, I think very highly of Cameron.

I remember that movie got tons of hype simply because 2000 New Years was coming...

There are about 5 or 6 songs on the soundtrack that I like... which is part of the reason it gets my underrated vote. Most soundtracks only have 1 or 2 songs that are worth a $hit... this one has several.

But yea... the movie isn't a masterpiece by any means, and does have several flaws, but it still has a few redeeming qualities.

Well, I stand corrected, had never watched the entire movie from start to finish but had seen most of the film sometime awhile back.

watched the movie last night... and you were right, it was crap.

It's a shame cause the first half of the film was decent... but then it just started getting worse and worse.

Tom Sizemore was a bad casting choice, and the actor that played "Philo" was terrible as well. Action / Fight scenes were god awful.

Definitely not worthy of a 7.2 IMDB rating.

Looking back though, what's interesting to me, that movie was made in 95 but took place just 5 years into the future, the year 2000. It's really crazy that society thought that in just 5 years we'd be that much more futuristic. Like it was accepted that in just 5 years there would be a black market for brain altering VR ...and we would be able to record people's memories and save the memories to a disk :oldlol:

Society in 95 was NOT tech savy at all...if we released a movie today that takes place in 2025 where that tech exists it would be laughed at.

Ready Player One takes place in 2045...imagine if that movie took place in 2025

Depends what you mean by underrated... overall rating? popularity/amount of people that have seen it? A lot of movies could be argued as underrated because they didn't have a lot of viewers or overtime it's grown older so it's kind of forgotten about in the sense that not a lot of people think to go out of their way to watch it again. Anyways...

Most Nicholas Cage movies feel a little underrated... Con Air. Gone In 60 Seconds. Face/Off.

While not underrated, I was reminded of True Lies with Arnold Scwharzenegger, that's a great movie that some may have forgotten about.

There are a million underrated movies, as well movies that were once popular but have gotten older and not a lot of people think to go back and re-watch which kind of makes them underrated in 2020.

This is not an underrated movie, or even a good movie... It's 2 hours 28 minutes long and I'm an hour in, nothing has happened until now. It's a bunch of pagan pyramid, all seeing eye garbage. But just now, this happened...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMFhRgYKCpQ

A cult member's face explodes on a rock after jumping to their death. I'm only watching the movie because I like 3 of the actors in it. Will Poulter, William Jackson Harper and Florence Pugh. I don't think the movie will improve over the next hour but I question what the purpose of this movie is, because it's been complete nonsense.

Midsommar is a crap movie. It was Freemason Luciferian garbage. You get the square and compass, black and white checkerboard, as well as near the end a guy in a shriners hat. If you would like to see mutilated bodies based on pagan rituals of the past, and want to see a bunch of naked women moaning as the dude plows a virgin cult member to impregnate her, then this movie is for you. You get to see like 15 vag's, old fat women included. The movie is filth.

Book of Eli is up there in terms of being underrated. The book has power, for good & bad people, this is truth.

would probably make my top 5 list if we're talking about the most underrated movies EVER.

6.9 on IMDB, but should be somewhere on imdb's top 250 list.

I thought the Star Wars prequels were better than most people typically say they are. They are not as good as the original trilogy but light years better than the trash Kathleen Kennedy has put out the last few years.

Recently the prequels are one of those things people hated at the time, then when the new trilogy came out people were like, "OMG the prequels were so much better than shit bullshit." Which is correct pretty much.

Off the top of my head...

The Black Claudron

...at the time in 1985 it was the most expensive animated movie ever...it doesn't get nearly as advertised as much by Disney because of its dark tone about death. I liked it.

Sunshine

...great sci-fi flick. The first half of the movie is awesome, the second half falls right on it's face.

The Assassination of Jesse James

...one of Brad Pitt's most underrated performances.

An honorable mention I'd like to mention is Passengers with Lawrence and Pine. Although the movie would've been way, way better if you changed the order of certain acts. For example the movie opens up and you find out Pine wakes up before everyone else then after a year he wakes up Lawrence because he's lonely. The movie would've been so much better and trilling if the movie started with Lawrence waking up and you find out that there's another passenger awake as well (Pine), but there's a mystery around him because you don't know he's lying or telling the truth.

Aside from "the empire strikes back" the original trilogy is bullshit too. The first part has some moments, but the third is cheesy AF and the ewoks suck big time.

As a whole I like it, but it gets overglorified imo.

FINALLY saw Rise of the Skywalker...I was putting it off after dull reviews...51% on RT

it's definitely underrated...it's the best of the new trilogy...Emperor Palpatine is a badass, great villain...love that they brought him back

spoilers:

The movie does have it's flaws...chewy is dead oh no!...SIKE :facepalm...C3PO's memory is wiped oh no!...SIKE! :facepalm

But I really like the back story of Rey being a Palpatine, didn't see that coming TBH, and I love that Han came back to have a father-son moment...the main plot and story I think was well thought out and well executed. The overall tone of the movie is dark and much more gritty than the previous 2, IMO this is the best of the new trilogy and I really don't understand the hatred for it...I suppose they could have made efforts to make it more complex, but IMO that just would have made it more messy, it's better when they just get straight to the point IMO.

I mean... the Star Wars movies are better than nothing, it's still entertainment to me, they aren't great but they aren't bad, they don't ruin my childhood memories like they do for some people. They are about on the same level as the prequels maybe a little better. I actually liked Force Awakens when watching it in theaters. I do think Rise of Skywalker did some good things with the story, but the execution just wasn't right. Left the theater overall disappointed but still thought it provided some entertainment value. Matrix 3 was an extremely disappointing movie when leaving the theaters, but over time it grew on me a bit... watched it a few more times, and it's actually not that bad if you can just focus on the story. Rise of Skywaler is about on same level as Matrix 3, closure on a good story but not executed the way you'd want.

Really interested in what they do with the Matrix 4 storyline.

https://youtu.be/JXgMk81CuXs

Feels like they will be focusing on rescuing children from the Matrix, which could be interesting.

might find it strange considering they're famous and often highly-touted, but I think some flicks in the Vietnam War genre might be the most underrated

Platoon is often put in the top 100 films, but usually barely cracks it, and honestly I could see how someone could think it's the best war film of all time. It's so realistic since the film's director, Oliver Stone, actually served there. And it might have the best cast among war films. Full Metal Jacket, also one of the most underrated films, because thet masterful Kubrick's (probably the second best director of all time after Hitchcock) direction is awesome and especially for the opening scene, and while the film might not convey the best message for a war film, the film might be top 100 all time and yet it often doesn't even grace top 300 lists.
