Of course, who's going to excel as the ultimate carrying machine? Obviously, none other than the self-proclaimed king aka bran himself.
But seriously, enough of your funded clickbait threads already..

Jordan's 85-89' casts
zero accolades
Lebron's 05-10' casts
2 all-star teammates (Mo, Zydrunas)
1 all-star caliber teammate (Jamison 2x all-star)
2 all-defenders (Hughes, Varejao)
Coach of the Year (Brown)
Top 5 defenses (07', 09')
Lebron's superior cast explains why he had higher seeds - he always had a 4 seed or better,, so he never carried a low seed to nearly the Finals like MJ did in 89'.. So MJ is actually the goat carry-job guy.
Jordan's 89' cast was worse than any cast lebron ever had, yet MJ took them to the cusp of the Finals - Phil inherited a team that might had already carried to the Finals doorstep.
Btw, in order for lebron to "carry" teams, he must reduce 22/5/5 all-defenders like Hughes, or 22/9 guys like Jamison... Or over-rebound as a SF, which disengages the bigs.. Or hog all the assists for himself instead of letting the ball move so the TEAM gets high assists

Basketball is team sport. No single individual has ever carried team to title. Plenty of individual players have stopped their teams from winning tho.

Who beat the better team?
1989 Cavs....... #1 SRS... 57 wins... #2 defense... 3 all-stars (plus 20/5/5 Ron Harper)
2007 Pistons... #6 SRS... 53 wins... #6 defense... 2 all-stars
1989 Bulls... zero accolades....... 47 wins... 6 seed... 40/6/8 on 50% for MJ
2007 Cavs... 1 all-star, 1 all-def... 50 wins... 2 seed... 25/9/7 on 45% for Bron
Jordan's carry-job, upset, and comp was better... :confusedshrug:

Jordan led both teams in scoring in every playoff series he played since his rookie year.
Unfortunately, one has to mention pippen if jordan is being talked about.

This question would be more interesting if it was only about guys who carried their team on 1 side of the ball.
AI carried the 6ers on offense, allowing them to succeed with a defensive-oriented lineup.
Dwight carried Magic teams full of weak perimeter defenders. His rim protection and help D allowed the Magic to succeed with a bunch of no-D shooters.
When you really give it a long, hard, really long and hard, look... it has to be Lebron.

Obviously. The Media and Fanship in general Loved Magic and Hated Barkley. :facepalm
The 1989-90 Season Barkley lead scrubs to 53 Wins, Crowned the Atlantic Division and Beat The Detroit BadBoys (Champs the year before and Champs later on in that same season) 3 of 4 games (the one they lost was by 3 points in an overtime win for the Pistons).
Barkley was easily the most impacftull and MVP player that season. He was even more deserving that season than 92-93.

The answer to the thread title is unquestionably LeBron James.
However, that doesn't mean a whole lot of much... because it doesn't mean he's the best ever.
How do you define best? Best at carrying a team by yourself, thus able to elevate others more than anyone else? Best at being a stand out elite on a team full of elites, thus elevating yourself above all other individual elites? Best at a combination of these two things? Best 1 on 1 player? What does that word even mean, when you really think about it? It's all just a bunch of arbitrary bullshit and unknowable objective reality. The core reality of who the 'best' player that ever played is simply unknowable. Therefore these discussions are fruitless and stupid.
They're for passing the time... they're not for accuracy or objectivity.
But as far as the OP goes... LeBron James. There has never existed a player in league history that could elevate trash can teams to contender status quite like LeBron... but as I said, it doesn't mean much.

Roundball_Rock
05-08-2020, 11:26 AM
In the sense of carrying scrubs or average players (which is what I interpret the OP as)? It is LeBron. It is hard to make a case for anyone else.
Jordan's 85-89' casts
Lebron's 05-10' casts
:coleman:
Bulls from 1985-1989: 38 wins, 30 wins*, 40 wins, 50 wins, 47 wins.
Cavs from 2005-2010: 42 wins, 50 wins, 50 wins, 45 wins, 66 wins, 63 wins.
Bulls in the playoffs: first round loss, first round loss, first round loss, second round loss, ECF
Cavs in the playoffs: missed playoffs, second round loss, NBA finals, second round loss, ECF, second round loss
It is absurd to compare the two since it is obvious one team got a lot more results.
Re: the 89' Bulls, that was basically the same roster that won two years later.

Hakeem's 1993-94 season and playoffs was epic. He carried that team in both the regular season and playoffs. He also won MVP-DPOY-FMVP. One of the most impressive seasons ever IMO.
Tim Duncan's 2002-03 season was also remarkable, especially since the Spurs beat a 3-peat team without him having a great second option.

The second option for the Warriors went 28/6/7 and the third option 16/4/1. Cavs' third option was 10/3/1.
Hakeem's 1993-94 season and playoffs was epic. He carried that team in both the regular season and playoffs.
In many ways but people forget who the other second options were then. For example, the Knicks' was Starks. Comparable to Otis Thorpe.
The other thing with Hakeem is what he did those two years he didn't match the rest of his career. LeBron has done it consistently.

I have a collection of his full games and I'm still looking for new full games. I want to ask you for a match orlando vs boston 1997.11.02, I would really like this full game. I can't get her anywhere. Therefore, I ask you for this game, I do not have such options. I would like it, because I already have a very large collection of full games and I miss this one, so I turn to you with a request for this game. Thank you so much Jindra

DuGOAT aka Durant. He singlehandedly carried the Warriors on his back in 2017 and 2018. No other player has ever managed to make their teammates better the way DuGOAT did with that Warriors team. They would’ve been a lottery team without him. With all due respect to MJ, but Durant is the rightful GOAT of the NBA.

This is really hard to argue against. That 2018 series vs the Pacers was the biggest carry job I have ever seen. His other teammates flat out disappeared. This is LBJ compared to his #2, #3, and #4 options in that series: Love, Smith, Korver, Hood
Points
LBJ: 241
Love, Smith, Korver, Hood: 242
Assists
LBJ: 54
Love, Smith, Korver, Hood: 27
Rebounds
LBJ: 70
Love, Smith, Korver, Hood: 113
Steals
LBJ: 10
Love, Smith, Korver, Hood: 19
Blocks
LBJ: 7
Love, Smith, Korver, Hood: 7
LBJ vs 4 of his best teammates.
Unmatched series carry if we look at raw numbers.

I thought this was for one season. If for a career then yes, it would have to be Lebron.
As for the opposing player, then Thorpe wasn't a great scorer. He averaged 12.8 ppg in that season while Starks averaged 19.0.
And the Rockets didn't only beat the Knicks. The beat a Suns team with Ceballos-Barkley-KJ and a Blazers team with Robinson-Drexler-Strickland.

Thorpe and Starks were both 1x all-stars. He averaged 14 in 94' (12.8 was in 93') but he was a 21 PPG scorer in Sacramento and then from 16.7-17.5 in Houston from 89'-92'.
Starks scored 19 in 94' but that was his peak. He was at 17.5 the prior year but never did more than 14-15 the rest of his career.
And the Rockets didn't only beat the Knicks. The beat a Suns team with Ceballos-Barkley-KJ and a Blazers team with Robinson-Drexler-Strickland.
Post-prime Drexler. He wasn't even the leading scorer on his (47 win) team by 94'.
Ceballos was hurt and 9/4/0 in the series. Kevin Johnson was one of the better second options back then. He just choked when it mattered most and he made the finals.

But that's not the reason why I mentioned what I did. You mentioned that people have to look at the other team's 2nd option and consider that when it comes to carrying a team.
When we do that, we see that the opposing team had better 2nd and 3rd options. Drexler, KJ, and Starks were better 2nd options than Thorpe. This isn't meant to put Thorpe down, but it says a lot about how great Hakeem was and how great he played that year. You aren't MVP, FMVP, DPOY, All-NBA 1st team, and All-Defensive 1st team for no reason.

So MJ is the goat carry-job guy and the stats show it - lebron only needed 25 on 45% during the Eastern Playoffs to make the 07' Finals, compared to 35 on 50% for MJ in the 89 Playoffs
