2000 vs pacers = smits
10-4-1 *last year in the nba

2001 vs 76ers = mutombo
16-12-1 *last decent year in nba, became a 5 and 6 bench player

2002 vs nets = maculloch
7-5-1 *second to last year in nba, played 4 years total in the nba

i mean...are we really like uh...giving tons of credit for this?

Shaq got defended by teams not players. He didn’t take 39 free throws by getting just rik smits in trouble. They rotated guys in to beat him up when he got the ball and send him to the line. Not many people guarded Shaq straight for very long. Mutombo tried but got wiped out. He was the DPOY at the time. Not that it was for man to man defensive reasons.

He had to face two great teams in the west finals (vs blazers and vs kings). When Lakers beat Kings in 2002, it was Shaq who carried them and Kobe who played terrible. So in 2\3 of those rings, the west finals was their finals.

How long till you try to tear down Magic for his FMVPs?

You forgot Ben Wallace, OP.

Shaq made the DPOY look pretty helpless tbh.

Unfortunately for the Lakers, other members of their squad were having issues with shot selection.

Mutombo literally won DPOY the year Shaq annihilated him. And it wasn’t the last “decent year of his career”, he was an all star who averaged a double double the next year.

Oops.

Seething has become such a funny word.

Funny because OP is, in fact, seething.

According to DBPM Nate McMillan is the greatest defender of all time. Even the creator of BPM says DBPM isn’t accurate and has serious flaws.

Shaq would have doubled his ring count if he was primarily guarded one on one like the other superstars but teams knew they had to double and triple team him because he was too dominant/unstoppable in the paint.

Yeah. Mutombo got worked all series. There was no stopping Shaq. you couldn't let shaq go to work 1v1

western conference offense is lesbianism, eastern conference offense is gay. and you don't really win more just because you can sh*t without having a d*ck in and out of your ass.

The Finals aren't the be all, end all, especially when the East is garbage.

The Lakers played and beat better teams than the ones they faced in the Finals.

There's no rule that says each round of the playoffs is harder than the previous round.

lol Mutombo could NEVER guard anyone one on one so saying he was the DPOY and tried is a joke. He wouldn't even match up vs Hakeem or Robinson because he was too slow a foot. The PF would always be defending them when his Nuggets and Hawks teams played. Of course he couldn't guard Shaq. Saying Shaq never faced any top Center during his success is a fact, period. That's just the way it is. All the stars like Hakeem, RObinson, Ewing were done in 2000. Shaq even lucked out when Zo went down with the kidney ailment. He was the one all star center left around and they had just made some trades to get Eddie and Brian Grant and were ready to run through the east and battle the Lakers. That never happened of course. Seems like Shaq and Kobe always lucked out throughout their careers. Same way the Celtics were an even better team in 2009 than 2008, but Garnett gets injured and Kobe gets to face the weak ass Magic.

Shaq beat Dirk and almost won a game against Hakeem.
