What do you think about Duncan in 2002 against the lakers? I mean they lost 4-1 so naturally no one talks about it, but that has to be one of the most unappreciated individual performances ever.

He’s matched up against the 2-time defending champs and pretty much peak Shaq and shows his heart.

For starters, he completely outplayed Shaq. If you want to quantify it, he led both teams in point and rebounds in 4 of the 5 games. Yea he had Admiral to spell him defensively but the minutes between the two were 44/24.

The Kobe/Duncan argument has happened a few times here and the playoff series h2h is always brought up...but this was a completely lopsided series talent-wise. It’s like holding it against Jordan for losing pretty quickly to the Celtics or to the pistons earlier on.

A rookie 19-year-old Tony Parker was literally the only other double digit scorer and the only one who could remotely create something offensively.

People tend to forget about him but every time he touched the ball it was an immediate double.

Probably even worse. Kobe was set up to defer to Shaq early on because he came in as a kid and Shaq was an established superstar. Jordan would never take a backseat to Shaq, he would have to become a clear second option.

Jordan's personality was actually more amenable than Kobe. Kobe was obsessed with being Jordan, kind of like the kid in school who's obsessed with being a child prodigy and doesn't want to hang out with any of the other kids.

Jordan's personality while similar in some respects was never quite that harsh. He wasn't chasing Michael Jordan ... because he was Michael Jordan. He didn't have that insecurity or chip on his shoulder.

Jordan's focus was to win more titles than Magic and Bird and be thought of as better than them. Shaq could plainly help him do that.

I think the two years at UNC also grounded Jordan a lot more. It's not like he was told he was the greatest things since sliced bread from age 13-14 onwards, he was a role player at times at UNC and had to play Dean Smith's way. That gave him a bit more maturity. Kobe never probably played on a team where he wasn't the defacto superstar that everyone was giving attention to since from age 13 or 14 onwards. UNC, James Worthy was a bigger star for a period of time.
