The truth is in the middle. Jordan was wrong to laugh it off but it wasn’t solely Payton’s defense that made the difference. Nate McMillans return was huge for them and was the catalyst for Payton’s improved play on both ends and Seattle’s defense working as it should

When McMillan was on the floor, he gave Payton a big offensive boost because he handled point-guard duties and allowed Payton to play off the ball, where he was more comfortable. In the first three games of the Finals, Payton scored 45 total points on 40.4% shooting. With McMillan at least trying to play in the last three games, Payton scored 63 points on 48.8% shooting. It also allowed Payton to run his defender, Jordan, through myriad screens to fire him out
