View Full Version : For A SG, Jordan Had Some Pretty Spectacular Passes

For a guy that never really got a lot of press for his passing, Jordan really had some pretty spectacular passes, Magic Johnson or Larry Bird-esque. It's an underrated aspect of his game, but how many non-PG, non-point forwards do you see that can routinely make some of these passes, they're right out of Magic's bag of tricks and the passes are right to a player in stride too:

Like 1:18 is a freaking no look bounce pass behind the back through 2 players that hits his teammate in perfect stride in a fast break situation.
That is an incredibly difficult pass to pull off.

Jordan is the only player in history to average 10+ assists in a series without playing PG or bringing the ball up (91' Finals)
Jordan also averaged equal assists in the playoffs to lebron thru 3 rings each (85-93' playoffs vs. 06-16' playoffs)
Jordan was also called a better PG than Magic/Isiah/Stockton during his 24-game stretch at PG in 1989 - that's what 30/9/11 averages will do, including a crazy triple-double streak (10 in 11 games)

The ONLY WAY MJ passes by a prime Magic and Bird for the best player in the league crown was by being THE TOTAL PACKAGE! Magic was the best passer EVER for his position. And was an alpha dog scorer and a great triple double threat. Bird was the best passer EVER for his position (before Bron). And was an alpha dog scorer and a great triple double threat. Both could play the PF position in addition to their perimeter spots. So for MJ to OVERCOME of all that, he HAD to be a great passing SG AND a graet defender on top of it. Easily on one of the top 10 passing SG's ever! He's in that mix with West, Harden, Pete, Wade, AI, Kobe, and Drexler.

He averaged 8.4 assists to 2.5 TOs for his first championship run. He also had 11.4 assists to just 3.6 TOs in the 1991 Finals, which was a better AST/TO ratio than Magic's, who had 12.4 AST to 4.4 TO.

Kobe does a lot of the same behind the back passes mj does in OP's video.
Both are better passers than wade.

They both average around 5 assists for their careers (5.4 for Wade, 4.7 for Kobe). When Wade had his 6+ assists seasons early in his career, he also had a ton of turnovers. From 04-10, he averaged 7 APG to 3.8 TOV. Just inflated numbers from playing Westbrook ball on mostly mediocre squads. 5.7 APG to 3.9 TOV for his 06 title run with 3.8 apg in the Finals. Kobe averaged 7.4 APG to 3.2 TOV in the 2009 Finals. Wade's highest APG in the Finals was 5.2 (2012).

When Wade had to completely dominate the offense by putting up 30.0ppg he was also creating for others averaging 7.5apg. Kobe was only averaging 4.5ap in 2006. There is then the fact that Kobe played no defense in 2006 while Wade was dominant on that end in 2009 despite expending so much energy offensively to carry the heat.

Kobe still often played off the ball in '06, the low assists come from having a much worse all-around supporting cast than Wade did in 2009 (yes, Odom was better than Wade's 2nd option). Kobe had to freelance a lot as a result and score in isolation, since that gave us the best chance to score on any given possession. Kobe was the playmaker on every title team and Phil himself said (in 01) that Kobe was the best playmaker/all-around offensive player he's ever had. I think him and Wade were very similar in terms of passing ability, it's just that Kobe played in the triangle for most of his career. We saw him play the PG position from the middle of the 2013 season, he averaged 7.4 APG in the 2nd half of that season.

Aww that's cute.
A couple nice passing clips from your classic 4-5 apg SG. Now imagine a SG who hasn't averaged less than 7 APG for the last 6 years. :lol :lol

Nobody cares about that dozen 3pt step back taking traveling monstrosity. You have to be the only fanboy he has on Mother Earth. I’m still baffled you can stan a player with such an unappealing game. You must be a masochist.

According to him Westbrook is a better passer than Harden since he hasn't averaged a measly 7 APG for a good three years now.

Pull up Russell Westbrook's bref and let me know how many games he's played at the SG position.
I'll wait for your answer off the air.

Actually, I think these two Jordan passing collections (The Puppeteer and Puppeteer II) really highlight Mike's incredible passing ability, perhaps even better than the original OP's video. Personally, I find Jordan's ability to distribute the basketball more impressive than LeBron's. When MJ distributed the basketball he did it in much, much tighter spaces, and with more impressive touch, precision, and timing. And he had all the full-speed behind the back, no look, fancy dishes too. Of course when Mike did that stuff it was in rhythm as to what the play required. LeBron too is a great distributor, no doubt about it, and he does the fancy dishes too, but kicking the ball out to a wide open shooter, I'm sorry but the degree of difficulty just doesn't stack up to Mike's. Jordan's dishes were more impressive, IMO. Here, take a look.

I feel like Michael Jordan could deliver passes with very good precision and he could spot some openings, but he didn't have a sixth sense with it like LeBron, CP3, Magic, Bird or Jokic. It seems like MJ is more of an "above average passer for a point guard" but not one of the best overall

I encourage you to take a look at the vids I posted above. You might change your mind on a lack of the 6th abilities in regards to Jordan's passing, because I believe you'll find plenty of stuff in there that's indicative of some real 6th sense sh*t in Mike's passes. Lots of dishes where he's placing the ball into a space before the man he's dishing to has reached the spot. Kinda like a basketball version of a quarterback throwing a football to the spot where the receiver is designed to be, before the receiver has actually broken open into that spot; y'know as things are developing.

aside from the first pass, none of these were spectacular dimes at all.
they were basic dishes.
the 2nd gif was literally just a standard two handed pass to a rolling big man.

Videos with a lot of replays are unwatchable. I just saw the damn play, why do I need to see it again?? Keep it moving so the video actually has rhythm and is much more fun to watch that way.
