Jews, for instance, faced similar discrimination and segregation in Europe for centuries, which they more or less embraced, because it fueled their communities to rely on themselves and to push harder to become as educated and financially mobile as possible, in order to deal competently with the more serious threats that would pop up from time to time.

Also, various immigrants who came to America often lived in their own communities and didn't have state-of-the-art school systems. The difference is their parents basically shoved them with both hands towards success. Often to the chagrin of the child, but ultimately paving a path to success in the long run.


Humans as a general group do not move without pressure. We're complacent. Same reason great coaches often bark at players and give em a kick in teh ass sometimes. Coddling and lowering standards and participation trophies make everyone feel good in the short term, but they dont get results in the long term.
