Michael Jordan and the Jordan Brand are donating $100 million over the next 10 years to organizations dedicated to promoting racial equality, social justice and access to education, the company said in a statement Friday.
The announcement comes amid protests over systemic racism and police brutality across the U.S. in response to the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police last week.
Nike, the parent company of Jordan Brand, also committed on Friday to providing $40 million over the next four years to support the Black community in the U.S.
“We must join forces with the community, government and civic leaders to create a lasting impact together,” said Craig Williams, president of Jordan Brand, in a press release.
“There is still more work for us to do to drive real impact for the Black Community. We embrace the responsibility.”
Jordan Brand emphasized that Black lives matter and said that it isn’t a controversial statement.
“Until the ingrained racism that allows our country’s institutions to fail is completely eradicated, we will remain committed to protecting and improving the lives of Black people,” said the release.
On Sunday, Jordan himself released a statement saying he stands with the protesters “who are calling out the ingrained racism and violence toward people of colour.”
