To me, on paper Kobe's stats look worse, but I didn't watch the 2004 finals so and can't speak to the eye test, defense, etc. I did watch 2011 though and remember LeBron looking like ass, which was made exponentially worse with the decision still fresh in everyone's minds.
On record Billups and other Pistons players said the game plan was to play Shaq straight up and not double. Then focus more on Kobe because they knew Kobe would force more shots up regardless if he was being doubled or Shaq was getting easy points. And it worked, instead of feeding Shaq who shot 63% from the field in the series and was getting played by Ben Wallace straight up, Kobe was determined to do his thing and it cost them severely.
Kobe was 17% from 3s in the series (4-23).
He shot 38% from the field (43-113)
Shaq shot 63% from the field (53-84). Shaq took 30 less shots than Kobe but still made 10 more than him.
