He's a 6 feet 6 combo guard. This season he averaged 19.3 ppg, 6.7 rpg and 3.3 apg for the OKC Thunder.

By which I mean....Penny is weird. Unorthodox . Tough comparison to make to anyone style wise.

That first gif.....don't recall seeing that one before, from Penny or anyone else. Pretty crazy footwork.

Never understood moving him to the 2. He's a point guard, pure and simple.

Was so good.

I’ve seen him flip that same move into a left to right crossover or spin back to the other hand. He had a lot of crafty shit like that into floaters and hooks and step throughs. Underrated bag. The Penny bag of tricks would remind a lot of people of Kobe’s.

Think this was very early in his rookie year. Dude was polished from day one.

Because he was 6-6 and a more gifted scorer than a passer, he could have averaged high 20s/low 30s easily.

He played in the wrong era. In 2020 he can be a 30ppg PG like Dame, Westbrook, Steph, Harden a couple years back etc.

No doubt about it.

I don’t know. Penny had the feel of a natural point guard to me. He ran the game more than just throwing a few fancy passes.

Penny had the rare combo of having a scoring skillset comparable to the best in the league on top of having the IQ and sensibilities of PG game management and facilitation. Would have been a perfect combo guard today and like I said before in this era 'elite PGs' are pretty much the first options on their teams. 1995 basketball put caps on his scoring potential because he would have been tasked more with setting up teammates( and of course he had Shaq down low to keep happy). Today? He'd pretty much be told to go out and drop at least 28.

Kblaze answered it well. He had exceptional feel, so when he went off you could feel his complete control of himself, and of the game.

It wasn't just injures that affected him. He wasn't a natural two guard. He didn't play off ball. Maybe had Shaq stayed he would have continued as a PG, because Shaq pressed Orlando to draft him because of his ability to run the game and get Shaq the ball.

SGA is more like a bigger Sam Cassell and Giannis hybrid. He plays a very celebral proding style offensively. He's already got an ELITE midrange game that he can get up anytime he wants. He's nowhere near the playmaker or passer of Penny. Although I think defensively he will be better.

I do think with all the young stars in the game SGA is under the radar.

Not really.

You used the right last name for a comparison. Plays more like Anfernee Hardaway in his Miami days.

Footwork isn't even the gap here. SGA's foot work is incredible for a young guard. This comparison is basically a trade of playmaking/natural PG instincts (Penny) for more defensive potential and slashing ability (SGA). Yes, I'm aware Penny was a nasty dunker at times, but SGA is better IMO at going down the lane and finding his spots with his crazy strides, length and change of direction.

Look at these. For the game 4 highlights 2nd half he really put them in a blender.
