View Full Version : Can Michael Jordan be a good boxer if he trains back in the 1980's?

Mike Tyson tried to fight Michael Jordan back in 1988. Tyson was jealous that MJ dated Robin Givens. What if Jordan accepted the fight? Do you think a 1 year of training with Angelo Dundee, or Emmanuel Steward is good enough to compete against a peak Mike Tyson? Do you think Jordan with his athleticism had the potential to be a solid heavyweight boxer?

Yeah for sure. The opposite is also true though. Mike Tyson would also compete for NBA GOAT if he trained in basketball for 1 year.

The ability to dunk from the free throw line has nothing at all to do with fighting. Because he's a talented athlete with long arms if he was brought up to be a fighter Jordan would be good at it but I'm definitely not going to say he'd be a champion. The other sport I see him being great at is as a football receiver.

it's hard to say on an individual by individual basis, but in general athletic freaks like NBA players would definitely do well in combat sport if they decided to train in that. the decline of heavyweight boxing in the US is partly due to talented and athletic big men pursuing NFL and NBA careers instead

Lol. No chance. Mike was a natural boxer, Michael wasn't. Idc if he was given 3 years to get ready.

guys with MJ's builds are exactly the types tyson used to lay out. He said he liked fighting taller guys because he could get inside their guards easier.

it would be interesting to see MJ boxing though with his trash talk, will to win, and extreme dedication to perfect his skill.

he has an Ali-like combination of that stuff.

he'd be barking at tyson like mo did joe.

Gotta say no on this. Boxing is hard as hell. It would take alot more than a year to be a professional fighter. Especially someone as talented as mike tyson. 80's tyson at that. He'd be lucky to last a minute. That goes for any basketball player though. Nothing against mj

Good point but theres been a comeback as of late. The main 3 of Joshua, wilder and fury are decent and theres some nice younger prospects on the rise. Previous generations were definitely more talented mainly for the reasons you give but this generation of heavyweights are huge. All the top fighters and prospects are 6'6 and above.

Either way thers no basketball player or any other athlete thats lasting in the ring with 80's tyson after training for 1 year. Even an mma fighter would have a problem.

MJ would do well.

He is 6-5 with a 6-11 reach, and has the frame to muscle up to 240-250.

He's a hard worker, disciplined. He would be supremely conditioned, and would learn technique.

We can't speak on his boxing-specific genetics, but anthropometrically? He's A1 tier.

Shaq would probably be the best NBA boxer, with Wilt a close second.
