Also, those athletes you mentioned absolutely needed the leagues they were in. The only reason LaVar was temporarily relevant was because of the NBA...and in the end he had to shut his mouth and take the money that was generated because his kid was in the NBA.

It isn't a bad idea in theory but the current players would have to expose themselves to major financial risk with the NBA fighting them with deeper pockets to draw in the talent and established relationships with TV networks and arenas, no doubt pressuring these allies and all their corporate sponsors not to do business with the player's co-op. The players are the most important asset nut there are a lot of other important assets. The superstars won't be signing themselves to 200 million-dollar guaranteed contracts. A guy like Giannis cold go from making 50 million to 5. A massive sacrifice short-term for a long-term benfit that the current stars won't get to enjoy.

It isn't a bad idea but...yes it is a bad idea because it needs a ton of thought that I doubt Irving has put into it.
