A LeBron James rookie card is going up for auction soon and is expected to fetch one million dollars, which would catapult it ahead of the recently auctioned Mike Trout card which sold for a modern record $922,500.

So not only will LeBron's card be the most valuable basketball card ever, but it will be the most valuable modern sports card ever.

The previous most expensive basketball card was a LeBron James and Michael Jordan combo card with an NBA logo patch and pieces of game-worn jerseys from both that sold for $900,000.

Over the last 17 years LeBron has turned basketball cards into true investment opportunities. The once dead market is again red hot.

Further proof of LeBron's true GOAT status.

Old people loved sports trading cards back in the day. That's why the ones who became wealthy still buy them for huge prices I guess. Mostly a nostalgia thing.

Some people buy rare artwork like Picassos and Van Goghs etc. as an investment, because it's the kind of thing where you can always expect someone will eventually come along and be willing to buy it for even more.

But sports cards are not going to be seen as timeless the way paintings are. Younger generations dont give a **** about trading cards. (At least I dont think so.) After the current generation of old men who grew up adoring them are gone, the value will die out IMO.

So hopefully whoever is buying a Lebron James trading card is doing it because they really want to own the card, and not because they expect to be able to flip it in 5 or 10 years. Trading card values will inevitably go down, not up. IMO.

I was big into Upperdeck/Fleer NBA cards in the early-mid 90's when it exploded, all my friends were (and pogs lol). With the becketts to keep tabs on the prices

But even as a kid I knew they were an investment to flip when I got older

Unfortunately they overproduced so many cards in the 90's and diluted the market and rarity.

I have over 10 full decks, almost all my best cards have either dropped in value or stayed the same since Ebay and fakes became too common.

Unless it's pre-90's memorabilia I don't believe they will ever inflate

I got some Zion rcs but wouldn't be surprised if he suffers a catastrophic injury and they become worthless. I went hard buying boxes out of nostalgia a few months back. Kinda regret it.

Here's the LeBron card:

That being said, I can't wait for MJ to die. Flipping those cards immediately.

There were no autographed patches as rookie cards for the other top 10 players. Proves nothing. The first autographed jersey cards came out 98 and Jordan's goes for crazy prices aswell - ungraded.

They usually sell for some hundred thousand. Note they're no rookie card.

I understand why Brady's rookie card is a grail because he was a 6th round pick and nobody expected him to go 6/9. But LeBron was already hyped as a rookie and his cards were over produced and stored away.

For someone that has a million dollars to use on a baseball card, you don't have to worry about sensible purchases.
