View Full Version : Is the term "mulatto" offensive?

I was told it's a slave term for a slave rape baby. The root of the word comes from "mule". I'm seeing this term being banned.

Thoughts? Insight?

Are you asking if it is considered offensive or if the word itself is offensive? Because words are only offensive based on the meaning we give them.

Like most of us would find being called RRR3 offensive, some wouldn't.

Why don't you just interpret it the way you want.

Fact of the matter is the word is now being petitioned to be banned

I'm surprised nobody has context on this. I've used the word in reference to half black and white for years.

Was this supposed to be funny? Yikes. At least there are Kangaroos in Australia, cuz you guys sure don't have humor, if you and Soggy 'shew are any indicator.

The nature of things is such that if the term is replaced with a different word, then that replacement word is going to become offensive, and then we're back to square one. Unless you replace it by a description, such as, half black half white. I'm all for changing that word, but only because it sounds kind of corny, or slang.

Come to think about it is my only problem is if we are gonna police every word potentially deemed offensive there will be no end. Even if we rid those words how do you police it there after? Jail people? What I do know is people love to test boundaries. Making fun of Jews was such a trend on ISH for years because it was taboo. Once upon a time hater was a banned word on ISH. My handle was partially bleeped out for a hot minute.
My son got harassed because his friend said nigg@. The more offensive the word the more tempting it is to include it in common dialogue. Soon all rap songs will have the word mulatto in rebellion. There's no real win. Calling it out just makes it more polarizing.

I never really had the opportunity to use it. But I have when conversating. Generally I say half white and black. My best friend is half white and black. I've used it, but generally just say half black because he looks more white. I think his dad was Jamaican. I don't know what to use now lol

You could use "people/person of color", apparently that term is currently acceptable for the PC crowd... which kind of hilarious imo, considering that "colored" was what whites called blacks back during the KKK/segregation era.

I did indeed hack your routine, my favorite bit was the one where you just said the N word (with a hard R) over and over again.

If the comedy clubs ever open and you have a chance to perform, please upload your set on here... I would love to see it (seriously)

Hmm, I actually have a stand up routine about this very same topic.

"What do you call an octoroon?" Pause... "RRR3." And I show the audience that picture of RRR3. It usually gets a lot of laughs, but I don't know if they're laughing at the joke or the picture.

I normally don't use the word Bro though so I don't think we are the same guy. You might be Walk on Water though.
