Vince Carter is retiring from the NBA.

What his last team had to say: Atlanta Hawks statement on the retirement of Vince Carter (http://www.insidehoops.com/blog/?p=23188)

Of course, the real Vince memories are mostly with the Raptors and then the Nets.

Vince lasted alot longer than I thought he would after leaving the Nets. Managed to transition from star to role player for literally half his career in a way I havent really seen. Kudos on a great career.:applause:

It's amazing how VC managed to completely change his image from soft/consistently disappointing star to one of the more respected players in the league simply by staying........long as ****. Even though his last truly relevant game was a decade ago in the 2010 playoffs, where he was a major disappointment for Orlando. But he continued to just play, play, play and.........well, nobody likes badmouthing the elderly.

Thanks for for the amazing dunks, is what I'll say. He'll go down as the GOAT dunker.

Vince's IQ for the game proved to be underrated. Underrated skillset as well to be a 40+ off-guard. Before 2010 I figured he'd have been out of the league by the time he hit 35

People were saying he wouldn’t last till 30 on here by 2003. He did silence a lot of haters just by sticking around. Even guys you aren’t a fan of you kinda like when they are old. Like me and Reggie Miller. I loved old Reggie those last couple years. Something about a crafty old vet still contributing that makes you forget why they were annoying when they were younger.

I feel you but Vince didnt really supply anything other than low level play in his last years. Pierce did pretty well as an old dude, hitting playoff game winners n shit

Yes, it's cool how he played for so long, but honestly he was a bench warmer for his last 6 years in the league and declined as a player over a decade ago. I'm pretty sure a bunch of players who retired in their mid-late 30's would have provided the same level of play as VC if they decided to play until 43.

Classic case of a once All-Star player who retired too late, in VC's case, he retired 5 years after he should have, but if I was in his shoes I would probably do the same.

Keep cashing those checks I say. Clearly he wasn't concerned about his averages cratering. If he played from 99 till the last year he was in double figures in 2014 ( when he was 37) he would maintained a 20ppg career average. And that's even with him being a sub 20ppg guy after 09.

That was against the eventual champions in game 3... the 2014 "GOAT" spurs.

Carter was actually a very good crunchtime player. I watched him for years on the Nets have absurd clutch moments.

The nets couldnt win because they kept running into ****ing shaq. and they never had anybody to guard him.

I stand corrected!

I don't see why not play as long as your body allows. There's not many jobs that pays $3M for half a year of working. Not to mention the endorsements that comes with it. This is generational wealth.

You're right about that but some players can't get roster spots and would hate to take the ego shot that comes with not being signed.

I'm sure some players would get embarrassed simply missing an all-star game selection.

Who's overrating Vince? Nobody calls him top 50 player in NBA history or something...

I never understood the "soft" label Vince got for being ridiculously injury prone. And how exactly was he a disappointed star?

Vince becoming a quality & valuable role player is why he completely became one of NBA's most respected players.

Farewell, old dunker.

In what sense? The Vince hype train was a fairly short ride. He settled into a top 15 level player for most of his prime then spent a decade as a journeyman role player. Whose overrating him to be more than that?

Vince also could have played more games before this if the league wasn't suspended because of the pandemic.

Yep. Hes in the conversation for being one of the top 2 or 3 wings that was supposed to give dwight a 2nd option.....that's how trash Dwight's help was. Left me bitter on Vince but hes always been a class act

Vince was still a guard for Magic in 2009.

And he was nowhere near close being top 3 player among guards. The likes of Kobe, Wade, CP3, Billups, Parker, Brandon Roy etc. were clearly ahead of an declining & past-his-prime Vince.

There's a reason why Vince took a backseat for the likes of Devin Harris & Brook Lopez. He wasn't good enough anymore having a big role for a potential title contender.

He played longer cause he barely ever had a deep playoff run. Was great to watch him play though, shame he didn't stay with the Mavs, after that it was just bottom feeders..

Countless of players haven't made deep playoff runs either, why didn't they play longer than Vince?
