ISH All Time Draft Results and Lineup Explanations

Ok so now the draft results are in and we are waiting for simulations to begin. Now is a good time if you want to further explain your picks and different lineups if you have them. We can use this thread as a precursor for the judge based voting portion. (It’s my understanding we are doing both simulations and voting based on certain posters judging)

Without further ado...here is the team

Warning, this may at first sound crazy but...I’m having Larry Bird come off the bench.

This starting lineup is extremely physical, strong defenders and rebounders at every position, and an absolute nightmare in transition. Stockton running with Wade and Erving would be automatic. There will be many half court alley oops. Karl and Shaq together will seriously take players out of games. By neutralizing them, fouling them out, or sending them to the hospital. That would be brutal, demoralizing, near impossible to try to deal with over the course of 4 quarters.

Stockton will be doing his thing in pick and roll and finding Malone and Shaq. Stockton can space the floor a bit and let Wade take on ball handling duties if needed. Erving is a capeable passer himself and will be able to keep the ball moving while looking for efficient buckets for himself as well.

Defensively the lineup is quite stifling. John Stockton is going to make it difficult for any point guard to operate. Wade at his prime was a borderline DPOY force. Quickness and strength rarely found in guards with a gigantic wingspan to boot. He has a nose for big plays and being in the right spots at the right time. Erving is as physically imposing as any small forward of all time and will give a great two way effort. There is a lot of low post scoring on these teams everyone has drafted and Malone and Shaq will be able to neutralize that to an extent.

There’s going to be a concentrated effort on getting Shaq started early. With the passing of Stockton Wade and Erving, the ball will be able to move freely until someone can get Shaq set up down low.


Now after getting beat down with physical and grinding basketball. We are going to be running and gunning hard with the second unit.

The floor will be spaced extremely well 1-4 , VC will be dunking. Everyone on this line up can shoot and pass and hold their own on defense. Matchup wise Larry Bird poses a problem for many teams in this lineup. There are a lot of large power forwards that won’t be comfortable coming out that deep to cover him. Larry of course is going to be the heart and soul of this second unit. His toughness and intangibles are going to elevate this squad to near or depending on matchup, surpassing the starters.
This will possibly be the closers as well. If any teams want to try hack a Shaq hijinks they are going to have to deal with this. With 3 certified clutch gods in Bird, Pierce, and Lillard. This line up is going to be cold blooded down the stretch.

Another bully team with enough spacing for the offense to operate. Wade slashing and dropping off the ball to Malone and Shaq when he sees help defense. Bird will be able to pass from the post and find big men like he did his whole career. Bird’s great rebounding and outlet passes for Wade and Carter on the break...Malone and Shaq trailing. Yikes. And of course we will have bird moments where he demands to get the ball and everyone get the **** out of the way.

The only thing lacking is multiple elite 3 point shooters, though Ibaka, Green and Marion were all above 35%. No matter, the Bird Celtics and Kobe/Gasol Lakers won rings on efficient 2 point FG%, ball movement, rebounding and using their size advantage, which is where my team excels, except this team is bigger and more efficient than those teams. The ball will be shared efficiently by Payton, whose 96 Sonics were 2nd in PPG, 7th in APG and had all five starters in double digit scoring. Naturally, Jordan is my offensive anchor. He excelled in scoring, leading the league at 31.5 PPG on route to a scoring title, MVP and Finals MVP. Its noteworthy that the only player since to do that is Shaq and the last time it happened before MJ was Kareem in 1971, so MJ's scoring doesn't come at the expense of team success. Draymond Green is an interesting case, as he provides high post playmaking to go along with high volume high efficiency 3 point shooting, while being a low volume player overall. This spacing and play style meshes well with the front court duo of Tim Duncan and David Robinson who will dominate in and around the paint.

Defensively is where my team shines. Think 86 Celtics on crack. The starting 5 has lock down defenders at every position, including 4 DPOY winners and the not too shabby Tim Duncan. Both man to man and in help defence situations, the team will stifle and frustrate anybody. Its worth noting that David Robinson had one of the GOAT DPOY seasons - 2.3 SPG, 4.5 BPG (7th highest all time) and 3rd highest Defensive BPM all time. Obviously, he's the defensive anchor. His job is made much easier by having Draymond Green, who played the KG defensive quarterback role on the 73-9 Warriors who had the #5 defence in terms of DRtg, and Duncan, the defensive anchor of the 03 Spurs who had the #3 defence in terms of DRtg, points allowed and opponent FG%.

The bench opens things up a bit. Penny Hardaway's size gives me a weapon to use against those of you who have big wing players. With the ball he's a great facilitator, leading the Magic (who missed Shaq for 30 games) to 60 wins and the #3 offence in ORtg, points scored and FG%. Sidney Moncrief is another lockdown defender to add to the mix, combined with his 22PPG makes him one of my go to scorers off the bench. Shawn Marion is a beast of a SF who provides rebounding, 3 point shooting and defensive nightmares to any other SF he matches up with. Serge Ibaka may appear to be a strange pick, but his league leading 3 BPG to go with wet close (59% from 10-16 ft, 13% of his shots) and mid range jumper (47% from 16-23 ft, 30% of his shots) and decent rebounding (8RPG) make him solid as a stretch 4. Nate Thurmond is the defensive anchor of the second unit.Offensively he's a clean up and offensive rebound guy which is good, can't have too many scorers.

So, versatility. The starting 5 will play a triangle hybrid that allows Payton/Hardaway more freedom. We can also run the floor, or switch in Marion for Duncan and Ibaka for Robinson to play small ball. To maximise the size advantage, Hardaway comes in at the 1, with Marion at the 3 who plays bigger than he is thanks to his length and athleticism.

Bird coming off the bench is Mark Jackson level shit when Julius Erving and Malone are starting. Especially on a team clearly lacking shooting.

Yep. The only possible way you justify Bird coming off the bench is if it's between him and Bron and even then, you start both of them.

I was entering my team into whatifsports and ended up changing a few things for my starting lineup.

Playing big. Lots of Wade pick and roll. Wade, Erving, and Bird are all great passers and will be able to find O'neal and Malone. Bird spacing the wing and feeding the post a lot. Team will be able to feast in transition with many athletic handlers and finishers. Very strong rebounding at every position. Good defense too. This team won't be taking a lot of 3 point shots but all are insanely efficient scorers even without it. Everyone on the team is well above 50% FG in their respective primes. (Wade is hovering around 49% actually but when you add in his FT shooting and frequency of getting to the line, he is still a very efficient scorer)

This line up has better size, better scoring, better passing, better rebounding, and better defense than any team. The only thing it doesn't have is 3 point shooting but with how efficient this team will be scoring without it, it won't matter.

I think Stockton and Wade is a more compatible backcourt. Scoring isn't your issue and you can afford to run the point with someone who can just concentrate on dropping dimes all game. You don't need Stockton to score, just game manage and facilitate( plus you can obviously run the classic Stockton/Malone PnR, or Stockton/Bird pick n pops. Actually why am I given you tips. :lol:oldlol:

Yeah I put Kobe at 45 mins and he was dropping like 24-25 in a few sims and Harden was outscoring him by 10-15 points sometimes. Maybe I should have used 06 Kobe? Too late now lol.

Go to NBA Semi matchup, click on dream teams and it should be able to let you create a team with unlimited salary cap. Then you search for you opponent.

Im surpised it was that close, I simmed our matchups and he seemed to win like 75% of the time. Rodman is highly valued in these simulations, I was planning on drafting him in round 5 or so but iamgine picked him up quick.

Looking at those box scores it seems like Kevin Love was pretty bad offensively overall, not to mention 2014 Love has a 30 defensive rating so he probably got raped on that end as well. Korver was hit or miss on some games, but still his defense is also pretty suspect. You could have done much better than Korver.

Thanks. According to this, it is likely that I would have won my first matchup if I changed the years for my players with higher defense rating.

For example, McAdoo has a 58 defense rating in 1975, but a 70 in the previous year. Same for West and Chamberlain, that if I picked them from their years together as a Laker.

I'm confused by this as well, I'm 100% positive whatifsports factors in fatigue, I know for sure they come into factor if you join an actual league on their site, but maybe they don't come into play when you are just simulating games for fun.

That's definitely a flaw if they don't imo. You can't just have these guys not resting a second and playing at a high level 48 minutes, shit is obv not realistic lol

Yeah I don’t know. I ran it a few times with subs and then heavy minutes for starters and it looked like they weren’t dropping off that much so I kept them high.

Switching Wade over to PG had good results too. Maybe I should have tried Stockton and Wade on Steph and Harden vs iamgine though.

I changed my starters minutes up to 45+ after the champion was crowned to see if I saw a difference or not, didnt bother to change it back to how I originally had it. After my series with south beach, I think it's clear the more you play your starters, the more success you have.

He’s probably just wasting possessions in this simulation. Obviously he would have been more efficient with a 3PT line since he was a perimeter player. Whatifsports does a bad job at estimating how often those players would have taken 3s too btw (it would depend on the era regardless but if Baylor played today he’s likely taking at minimum 3 3s a game)

Yeah, admittedly as I said in the original thread I thought it was ridiculous that we had gone 8 rounds and he was still on the board, so I picked him. Even my write-up was like 'how we gonna overlook a legendary player like him'. But for future unless its a Kareem/Magic/Bird/MJ type old-school guy I'll probably focus on more modern guys. The algorithm probably isn't too kind to alot of those older guys. I picked Russell as my center and he just didn't supply the kind of defense I wanted. Moses didn't do much better.
