View Full Version : Artest, Cassell, Redd, and AK47 were all one time all stars. All of them in 2004.

It feels like Redd and AK would have made it a couple more times. Artest too if not for the....incident. Cassell I knew because he was always the "Never an all star" guy before that.
Kenyon Martin and Jamal Magloire were also only all stars that year but....they feel like people who should be one time all stars if that.
It feeeeeeels like AK and Redd had good runs. Ak had everyone talking about 5x5 games for a while there. Im sure his injuries got in the way. He was washed up at like 28 or so. I think id take him first among this group for right now but id get taking any of the other 3 to be honest. Nobody just stands out as the obvious pick.
Artest would be interesting. At 6'7'' 250-280 depending on the season....Ron is a big these days isnt he? A 4 on most teams and a 5 somewhere like the Rockets?
Be interesting to see how hed be used. He could score a few "Agile fat kid" ugly baskets when he wanted to. Not sure its the best way to explain it but I always felt like he moved like a fat guy who....wasnt fat. I know that isnt clear...but he moved weird. Like he was being held down by invisible weights but overcoming it.

2004 was a weird year. That's the same season Jermaine O'Neal and Peja finished top 4 in MVP voting, and the one time Ben didn't win DPOY from 2002-06

94 had 8 first time all-stars, 7 in the east alone.
East:
BJ
Horace
Mookie
Coleman
Starks
Oakley
K.Anderson
West:
Cliff Robinson

Artest and Kirilenko along with Miller are my 3 fave players ever. Too bad Ron became a headcase and Kirilenko faded away because of injuries.

Kirilenko guarding Zach Randolph and trying to lower his center of gravity to compensate for the 50 pound diffrence and quickly springing up to block his shot in the post was amazing to watch. From a low defensive stance to quickly skying high for the block all in an instant.

It's been a really long time and to pretend that I remember the season as it pertains to those players exactly as they were is disingenuous at best.
That being said, drama aside? Give me Artest out of all of those guys and I don't even hesitate to think twice about it.
Ron Ron was a bad, bad man on the court.

I didnt realize Artest and Redd were one time all-stars. I mean I dont keep track of the rosters every year, but you'd think those guys had a few all-star campaigns in that time period.

Artest was obviously a great defender but his offense was so low iq especially as an allstar caliber player. Sad part was he had the tools to be better but was always inefficient offensivey especially come playoff time.

well.. that team would probably be ridiculous given the fit, two all time great defenders, one great floor general, and one great shooter.

Kirilenko was very good. Had a good little run that season in Minnesota, too, but injuries again came up.
I always thought Martin could have been a terrific player. Should have been a great great defender, instead of a great and sometimes almost great defender. Should have been playing C.

One thing about Cassell -
Top 3 GOAT Rookie championship postseasons. Behind only Russell '57 and Magic '80.
Don't even know what his numbers were because it doesn't matter. He was so good and so clutch throughout. Played nothing like a rookie. They don't get to the Finals, much less win the Title, without him.

I completely forgot about Jamal Magloire.
Is he the worst all-star in recent memory?
He was not even close to being worthy of a selection.

2004 was a horrible year.
Look at the top 5.
Ben Wallace was a top 5-7 player.
Look at the MVP ranking.
Lol.

04 does have the honor of probably the worst list of players of the month ever. In the east it was Baron Davis, Jermaine Oneal, Redd, Kenyon, Odom and Jamal Magloire. Good players....but thats tough.

A big part of that is 2004 was one of the last years in which 'real'... 'actual' defense was genuinely still allowed to be played on perimeter players.

I did. 13/10 without even having elite defense. Let's not even bring up that as a center he shot 47% that season...
47% for a center is pitiful especially for a guy who lived in the post

kobe was horrible. Even Duncan had a good come down after 03. Dirk also not as good as in 03.
Kidd declining. Who‘s next?

That was Shaq's worst season since his rookie year too
But tbf to those guys they were playing in the most intense defensive season of the modern era. Only two players averaged over 25 ppg that year (both needed 23 shots a game), and nobody who made it past the first round did so in the playoffs

you are being an idiot mate.
Kidd and Duncan were literally still peak. Dirk and kobe both prime. Garnett at super saiyan level.
the top 5-10 players from back then were collectively, easily better than today's crop.

Duncan wasnt close to 03 form. Had an injury.
You are either out of touch or obtuse.
If thats Kobe‘s prime then his prime sure sucks.
That top 5 was names only. Which is why you had so many aberrations.

the top players in the NBA didn't play in the 2004 olympics. i think USA got bored of winning, and cocky... our B team can beat you.
Kidd, Kobe, Garnet, Dirk, and Shaq all out. Only Duncan.
But after getting shit on in 2004 and 2006, the true stars had to lace them up and take back the throne.

I guess playing defense used to matter?
Michael Redd was better than Klay Thompson.
Michael Redd
WS 19.5 / PER 55.9
1x NBA All-Star
Klay Thompson
WS 16.4 / PER 46.8
5× NBA All-Star
It's almost like the NBA players are worse today and young fans today are more stupid.
