I have an interesting angle on this, I do some work for a Pop Warner program that is in fact called ... The Redskins. When I played as a kid, there were different team names for every weight class, Eagles, Steelers, Rams, Lions, Jets. Somewhere about twenty years ago some genius decided a single name would be more cost efficient, rightly so. How they came upon The Redskins I really don't know. I remember thinking at the time eventually this would be a problem. I've heard the arguments for years, and just am not invested enough in it to form a great opinion, but even at the time, just from a pragmatic standpoint, didn't think it was a wise decision for a name.

Now we're here. No one had really that I know of voiced an issue in the last two decades. But a month ago or so, one of our volunteer coaches went on FB and used the word "animals" to describe rioters. It didn't go over well. After trying to throw him a lifeline, basically needing him to apologize publically, he went on start citing other people of color describing people misbehaving as animals. Eventually they just had to let him go, the truth was last season was his first year coaching, he had some background issues to begin with, and over the course of the season wasn't getting along with many of the parents anyway, so it seemed like many of them sensed blood in the water, and pounced.

All that public attention on FB led to the follow on. "Bout time you got ridda him ... Now just gotta fix that name." All of a sudden we were inundated with angry posts about the name, majority of whom were people unaffiliated with the program. These handful of management board members (all close friends of mine), felt they had to do something. So we wrote up a statement about the team name change having been looked into several times over the years (my friends just took over last year), and the cost was just more than could be sustained and keep kids playing. Many people insisted at that point that the league should be shut down. We started a fundraiser for a goal of 20k which is roughly what it would cost to replace everything the league has. All the people who had such huge issue with it managed to generate about $400 in donations so far. To set aside money for the next few years would eliminate any travel reward possibilities for the teams. Last year a team didn't lose until the super bowl in Disney World.

I'm a pragmatist, I'm not interested in offending anyone, but I just can't see costing kids these opportunities being worth it. I was actually just suggesting last night that if the NFL goes through with the change, it would be worth writing a letter to the league and see if they'd be willing to help us financially to change our name. It's worth a shot.

I had a conversation about this the other day with some friends of mine. I actually agree. Football fans honestly don’t give a shit. No one is going to cancel their season tickets or stop watching because their name stays the Redskins. Maybe sponsors will threaten to pull out. But they will crawl back or new sponsors will be found. Owner Dan Snyder has hired a District of Columbia law firm to review the Washington NFL team's culture, policies and allegations of workplace misconduct.

Beth Wilkinson of Wilkinson Walsh LLP confirmed to The Associated Press on Thursday that the firm had been retained to conduct an independent review. ESPN was first to report the hiring.

The Washington Post reported Thursday that 15 female former employees said they were sexually harassed during their time with the team. In a statement, the team said it takes issues of employee conduct seriously and, "While we do not speak to specific employee situations publicly, when new allegations of conduct are brought forward that are contrary to these policies, we address them promptly."

Within the past week, three members of the front office have left the organization. Director of player personnel Alex Santos, assistant Richard Mann II and longtime broadcaster and senior vice president Larry Michael are no longer with the team. Michael announced Wednesday he was retiring after 16 years.

Also Wednesday, the team promoted Jeff Scott to assistant director of pro scouting and advance coordinator to replace Mann.

Santos, Mann, Michael and former business executives Dennis Greene and Mitch Gershman were mentioned in the Post story.

Washington is in the midst of several months of significant change. President Bruce Allen was fired at the end of the 2019 season, coach Ron Rivera was hired on New Year's Day and given control of football operations and the team this week announced it's dumping the name "Redskins" after 87 years.

Allen's departure coincided with the firing of the team's previous medical and training staff, and Rivera brought trainers with him from Carolina and hired a new coaching staff.
