From a talent and vocal range perspective only. Total record sales should not count. And again, this is meant to exclude people such as Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, etc.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Annie Lennox
Sade
Lena Horne
Natalie Merchant
Grace Slick
Stevie Nicks
Ann Wilson

Been listening to a lot of Annie Lennox lately.

Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde, Linda Perry of 4 Non Blondes, and Rachel Nagy of The Detroit Cobras, are all alt rock singers that sound similar, so I guess I have a type. 4 Non Blondes probably were the biggest of them, albeit for one album. But Perry went on to write and produce hits for Christina Aguilera, Pink, and a bunch of others. The Detroit Cobras are the smallest of them by a good shot, but I like them a ton. A pretty big catalog and the grungiest sound of them.

Brittany Howard of The Alabama Shakes warrants mentioning, but she's bluesier and more powerful. Just a different sound.

I could probably come up with a dozen more. I definitely have a thing for female singers particularly from rock backgrounds. Those are just the first few that come to mind. And those first three really have a similar sound.

My 2 favorite vocalist of all time are Alicia Keys and Lauryn Hill. I don't know if that's too famous.
I'd take Delores O'Riordan. The Cranberries was one of my favorite bands growing up. I don't think anyone has ever been able to emulate her.

As far as rock vocalists go, male or female, prime Ann Wilson has to be right up there amongst the GOATS

Liz Fraser mention... good. They don't call her the "voice of God" for nothing.

She butchers the verse; it is an almost untameable voice. But wait for the chorus. She'd have smoked any singer.

Not a huge fan of female voices when it comes to singing. Debbie Harry from Blondie is my fav. female voice.

This one though is from 32yrs ago. I've always liked her voice.
