I think one of those are just varying circumstances. 04 he was with Karl Malone and Gary Payton so he didn't have to score as much.

His scoring was actually pretty consistent, especially in the post Shaq years.

Averaged 35 & 32 in the Smush/Kwame years taking a lot more shots, then 28, 27, 27, 25, 28, 27 in the Gasol era until his injury. Hell, look at the 08-10 playoff runs, 30, 30, 29

His playoff TS % is a good example of how the rules changes helped offensive players.

1997-1999: 51.0%
2000-2004: 52.2%
2006-2012: 56.1%

From 2006-2010 he was at 57.0% before regressing in his final two playoff appearances as he aged.

After shaq's gone in the lineup, he's averaged 33.5 ppg in the two playoff berth seasons that the lakers had before they made it back in the finals again in 08 with pau gasol. Turns out that 06-07 was his last averaging at least 30 or more.

01- breakout season, beef with Shaq during the RS over who's alpha scorer
02- scales back to avoid chemistry repeat of 01
03- puts on pounds of muscle and wants to show it off, goes on hot streak, starts employing the 3 more
04- Malone and Payton come onboard, flying back and forth between the courtroom and games in the same day

Kobe had a godlike consistency throughout each season.

The flunctuation from one season to another is caused by a number of reasons, mainly because of different teammates and different rules.

Kobe toned his scoring down in 02 because he wanted to be more of a 'playmaker'. Don't remember the reasoning but I do know that Phil actually called Kobe TOO UNSELFISH at one point. Sometime during the playoffs.

In 2003, Kobe set out to prove he was BITW and had said that was his goal. Which is why he put on like 10 pounds of muscle.

2004 is an obvious one. Off the court issues. Kobe stopped doing some of his routine workouts, and as a result became thinner. He was not in shape despite the weight loss.

This is more or less what I can remember and read at the time.

Ultimately he was probably a little bit indecisive.
