Its strange to me that the majority of championship teams had elite off ball movement but most of the best players in the world today have all but abandoned it. The only superstars that havnt is steph and kawhi.

I realize on ball play is more exciting to watch for most fans but it dosnt lead to championships so whats the reason for this shift in philosophies?

Simple: Statistics

Reason 1: 3 pointers are statistically a better shot vs a fg (Ex. 50% more points at a 10% less make percentage assuming 38% 3pfg% vs 48% 2pfg%)

Reason 2: Pace of game, more shot attempts at XX% is always better than less shot attempts at same XX%.

Not sure this explains it.

Reason 1: you can still create 3's from off ball movement. The best team in this era has shown this. The warriors are probably the goat off ball and 3 point shooting team.

Reason 2: if this was true than the best players in the world would always be the best 3 point shooters and this isnt true. As a matter of fact the best players in the world who do all the winning are usually the best at either mid ranges or post play and finishing at the rim. Steph in 15 was the only exception to this in pretty much forever.

Remember the ball movement of that 2014 Spurs team and how well they were shooting all those wide open threes? How they made the Heat look old in the finals, and Lebron was forced to take quarters off standing in the corner?

AAU culture. erosion of college ball where team fundamentals are drilled.

But yea it's obvious to anyone thats played it's much easier on your energy levels if you're guarding a guy who isnt moving. And only 1 of your teammates has to put effort in to stop the ball dominator. It's basically giving 3-4 defenders the play off every possesion which will leave them fresher for offense and hustling up and down the court.

The best teams are still moving off the ball plenty.

The Celtics still move off the ball plenty. Don't watch so many Rockets games and you'll see it more. :lol

as others said not every team play like the rockets. It's also a bit easier to replicate what the rockets do than what the warriors did the past 5 years. Just get a ball dominant offensive hub and shooters

It’s all about money. On ball = more stats = bigger contracts. That’s it. Winning championships is not these guys’ first priority.

That should have been called a violation, should it not?

there's no violation for stepping out of bounds without the ball in hand.

Yes there is, but I just looked it up... I was wrong, this specific instance is not a violation. Steph only had to establish 1 foot back in bounds... not both. I thought it had to be both. He established one before he got the ball and the other foot wasn't out when he first touched.
