I was just watching a Mike Tyson documentary and I thought something was off. They were highlighting Mike Tyson KOs and when they quoted the dates they were mostly in the span of 2 years.
Mike Tyson fought his first 27 fights in the span of his first 2 years as a professional :wtf:
He fought a total of only 76 rounds. So half his fight came in 1985-86

That is madness at HW! That's pretty much a fight every 2 months...at HW! I'm even more impressed with Iron Mike

Tyson fought 15 times in his first year, and the first fight was in March. He fought once eight days after his previous fight, and seven times from October to December.

He fought tomato cans though.

Lots of boxers fought a lot of tomato cans at the start of their career to boost their record / get easy $$$ & experience. Foreman, Moore, etc. This is nothing special.

This has been said about his entire fighting career, and not just the start of it.

Any time Tyson didn't fight a 'tomato can' (Evander, Lenox)....he lost

it's pretty much agreed that the best fighter Tyson ever beat was Michael Spinks...who was nothing special

Larry Holmes was 38 years old when he fought Tyson...WAY past his prime

Well I wouldn't call Spinks, 38yr old Holmes, and many others tomato cans although not at the level of all time great. They were excellent world class boxers.

The argument for and against Tyson has been well hashed and it's one of those unknowable thing that's fun to debate.

The volume and age is impressive though. Against pros when he was virtually a kid. He fought those fights at an age younger than Foreman fighting his first fight. Taken into account Foreman was impressive too so really both accomplishments are impressive. These are still pros and fighting the unknown. At 18 none the less. Had he taken the same fighters after 20 fights under his belt it wouldn't be as impressive.

Also, Tyson wasn't taking a whole lot of punishment in those early fights. He was putting a lot of people down before the first round was halfway over.

I dunno, not really impressed with people beating tomato cans. Obviously Mike was much better than them and his team knew it. Those were very safe fights designed to make him look good. As it should be.

They were considered soup cans after Tyson beat the crap out of them

Need to set up a charity so people can donate money to the homeless. The stipulation being that Biden. Bill/Hillary/Chelsea. Obama/Michelle. The entire Bush family. Podesta brothera. Omar. Cortez.... step in the ring and take one punch from Mike Tyson, bare knuckles. Would get a billion dollars in donations for the homeless.

Precisely. Also seasoned vets who have fought pros should not lose that easily to an 18 YO. These aren't amateurs. It's not like picking up Boxcar Willy from a local boxing gym. Some were ranked.

If a 4-0 18 YO came in and knocked out current top 30 HW we'd be thinking damn. Erroll Spence was getting similar hype before Algeiri.

Part of his legacy was the way he destroyed opponents. Take the Euro HW champion Frank Bruno. He was a big mf'r just like Lenox Lewis. You could literally see the fear in his eyes of Tyson. He was terrified. At no point except for a nice hook in the 2nd did Bruno look like he was in the fight. Lenox Lewis stopped Bruno 4 years later too but was losing the fight until he managed to catch Bruno with a left hook in the 7th.

Tyson had all kinds of personal problems going on at the height of his fame, and couldn't manage all the responsibility, expectations and that hot famous wife of his. He even suspected Trump and Brad Pitt of banging his wife while they were married. I don't think he folded soley because of better competition. IMO it had more to do with him not being able to handle his personal life and focus on boxing. He's not an intelligent or focused individual

Sure these aren't amateurs. They're tomato cans pros. They're very safe fights. Stepping stones for the talented. It's very common in boxing.

Spinks is in short list of all time greats at Light Heavyweight. Among his contemporaries, Charles, Conn,
Bob Sanders , Rosenbloom, Old Mongoose, Tunney, he was one of the few that also won a Heavyweight title.
So he’s special in that regard but Tyson is always overrrated especially by casual fans. He did beat some of the good fighters but his resume is pale in comparison with the other all time great fighters in that weight class.

Mike Tyson lacked some discipline that's why he was defeated by Buster Douglas. Firing Kevin Rooney was a horrible decision. Rooney was his best trainer since the late Cus D'Amato. Tyson had better skills earlier in his career. It deteriorated once he got addicted to drugs, and drinking booze.

Canelo is trying to fight like 5 times a year, it's good to see a fighter fighting more than 2 times a year.
