McDonald's said Wednesday that it would be closing about 200 U.S. restaurants amid the coronavirus pandemic. The announcement comes days after the restaurant chain joined Walmart, Target and CVS in mandating masks in all locations.
"We're spending a lot of time right now in our restaurants making sure we can keep our crews safe, making sure we can keep our customers safe," McDonald's President and CEO Chris Kempczinski said in an interview only on "CBS This Morning" Thursday. "We've for quite some time required our crew to wear masks, but we thought that in light of what we're seeing, it's prudent now that we also ask our customers to wear masks in the restaurant as well."
While Walmart and CVS have said they will be limiting their enforcement of the mask mandate, Kempczinski did not rule out the possibility of getting authorities involved if a situation in which a customer refuses to wear a mask escalates.
"If someone is unwilling to wear a mask and comply with our rules, that might be where we might bring in law enforcement," he said.
Kempczinski said restaurants and crews have undergone training about how to "explain to customers why we have the requirement," and the training included "deescalation." In recent months, retail workers at various stores across the country have been attacked for trying to enforce mask mandates.
"Ultimately, we're not going to be asking our crew people to put themselves in harm's way," he said.
However, Kempczinski said he was "pleased" that customers have so far been "more than willing" to wear a mask in the days since the rule was implemented.
"I think the vast majority of people, vast majority of Americans understand why it's important to be wearing a mask," he said.
The recent coronavirus-safety guidance came as McDonald's announced they were "refreshing" company values, including initiatives surrounding diversity, inclusion and "keeping our people and our customers first."
"And that, in the case of the pandemic right now, is all about safety," he said.
McDonald's has also faced allegations that it has fostered a workplace culture of sexual harassment, and allegedly punished workers for speaking out. A lawsuit was filed against the fast food giant last year, and The Nation recently published an article describing "targeted workers" and "recurring sexual harassment."
Kempczinski called the allegations "disturbing" and said the company needed to "find out what went wrong" and "make fixes quickly" to "understand how do we do better."
"It certainly goes against everything that we stand for as a company, everything that I want us to be doing around diversity and inclusion," he said, later adding: "You don't get to be a brand and a business the size of McDonald's without treating people well, being a good employer. But in a system of our size, you will have situations the likes of which you're talking about there."
"When those situations crop up, it's important to acknowledge them, address them, and do everything we can to learn from it," Kempczinski said. "And so as CEO, that's certainly what I'm committed to make sure happens."

A patron is now considered a trespasser? A paying customer is now considered a trespasser and is subject to having the police called on them and be arrested?
Funny how these patrons are now enemies to you, but people protesting on the street standing inches away from one another are not.
Than don't wear a mask
Get arrested and win the lawsuit after the fact
That is what the constitutional auditors are doing. Just make sure you have everything on tape because you can trust the police

If a patron refuses to leave for not following the corporation's rules then yes they are a trespasser.

Of course a patron is trespassing if asked to leave and they refuse.
I watched people be arrested for not leaving Kmart when I worked there in the dark ages.
A store can put you on no trespass for a lot of things. Refusing to leave when asked is one of them. After that they can have you arrested for walking in the door.
You will find a “right to refuse service” sign at any place like that.

The power that I have. Amazing.
However, it's no secret that I'm against the wearing of a mask. But I find it ridiculous that we complain on one hand that this country has way too many people in jail and prisons across the country, and yet we still manage to find new ways to arrest people. It's very hypocritical and stupid. It's almost.....political.

I obviously disagree with you about wearing masks but agree 100% that they can find ways to arrest and take your freedom away. Your best defence is always to record these interactions. If you really believe masks are that much of an issue than I'll support your personal choice not to wear a mask and fight the legal battle.

Id like a law that gay men must wear condoms during sex. They are factually much more likely to spread AIDS, and it’s a public safety issue.
It’s just a lil piece of rubber anyway. So it shouldnt be a big deal. But gay men should be required by the govt, acting on behalf of the scientific community, to rubber up.

Have you ever gone out? I just got back from Atlanta. My friend was in athletic gear so we couldn’t go to the steakhouse we wanted as he was. Some places don’t allow hats. Is this a new concept to you?
The reasons are new not the practice. You can’t refuse to abide by a dress code then refuse to leave. You just forgetting how owning and operating a property works over your politics? This concept has been known and accepted for hundreds of years you just don’t like the particular reason the piece of fabric is being demanded. But lacking or having a piece of fabric being against the rules is hardly new.
Remove your hat, change those shoes, put a real shirt on and not a jersey or you don’t get served. Not the customers decision to make. Your decision is who to spend your money with.

How is it a smart business decision to refuse paying customers over a piece of fabric? I mean, it's one thing if we knew with 100% certainty that masks or face coverings prevent the spread of COVID, but we don't. And since we don't, why are the restaurants open in the first place? Oh that's right, these companies have to make a profit, but not that much of a profit if they are going to turn away customers for not wearing a ****ing mask.
Demand they serve you, people. Let's put an end to the madness.

I suppose how smart it is comes down to where your community stands. Plenty of places the public would consider you insane to let people in without a mask and it would likely hurt business. People do complain about non mask wearers. A lot of them. I’m in South Carolina where they aren’t mandatory and people get annoyed when non mask wearers are around at times. It’s a conservative place....but I don’t know if the non mask side would be smarter to cater to at the moment business wise.
In the end you vote with your dollars. You want their business to suffer don’t shop there. If they can make it without you obviously the community doesn’t feel how you do.

i'm all for masks indoors 100%, but... some people in chicago i've seen really take things too far. for example i've seen two people approaching one another on a side street sidewalk, BOTH wearing masks and one of them will go out of their way to walk along the curb or cross the street. :oldlol: even while wearing a mask OUTDOORS they're still super cautious.
but whatever, i give people the benefit of the doubt and like to think said person has an underlying condition or lives with an elder, but then the other side of me says they're just being a good little libtard.
what made me laff the other day was passing an oriental nail salon that sported a sign in the window saying "mask and social distants required".

Because 1 covid case in the restaurant means they'll be forced to shut down for a bit. That lost revenue means more to them than your $10 meal.

Almost everything is open inside or out here. I’m talking indoor trampoline parks, McDonald’s, gyms, and everything. I’ve been inside McDonald’s to get breakfast for my team at work since the drive thru line was so long. I have a mask but I don’t think I wore it then. It really only goes on in supermarkets where everyone has one and I don’t wanna be that one guy. I think in the city limits here there is a mask mandate but I live in the county.

Funny how these idiots accept the no shirt, no shos, no service policy without a whimper but masks for everyone else's health is a step towards autocratic rule :lol
Gotta give it to the rightwing, they ain't consistent at all...
Yes, because both scenarios are the same....

The mask is significantly more reasonable than many dress code rules. Like no hats or athletic shoes in some places. Lots of places require a jacket. Once you accept “vibe” or desired atmosphere as a valid and legal reason for a business to enforce certain pieces of fabric you absolutely lose the argument about them doing it for the health of their employees. Right or wrong assumption....it’s a much more important reason than just keeping out people who dont own a jacket or nice shoes who would ruin the upscale feel you’re going for.
A business can kick you out for wearing a blank T-shirt or not having on the proper shoes nobody will even care about but an actual medical reason....which in most places is also mandated by law....that’s being unfair?
Even if masks don’t work at all(which very few people who aren’t google experts suggest) it’s a much more valid reason for a dress code than flip flops making your place look less classy.

They dont care about our health. They care about bad publicity. Imagine if there was an outbreak of cases originating from a McDonalds store?
Or if an McDonalds employee gets sick and they need to shut down for a couple days to decontaminate?

I’d imagine they are concerned about a lawsuit from an employee for a hazardous work environment if they fall short of government recommendations. I’m sure it’s come up in some high level meeting. County says mask up...your job let’s in 1400 non masked people and you get sick?
America loves a lawsuit.

At this rate, and if this is the fear of big corporations and government officials, the masks may never come off until a cure is found.
I'm packing my bags at that point.

From someone who has been wearing a mask 40+ hours/wk since April... it's hella easy to put it on for a short duration...
If you don't like it, go to another business... this is literally how things should have been this entire year

What is the big deal with wearing mask? In a global pandemic, how is it not entirely reasonable to require people to wear mask?
Okay, if you're alone in your car, we can all agree it shouldn't be required. Or if you're outdoors practicing social distancing.
But in a McDonald's?
Come on now...

If I see you and you're not wearing a mask, I'm gonna tell you then tell on you.
And if you come with your shit? Brother, I'm smacking you up.
Infringe upon rights...you are a non-American, and I agree with Kblaze about responding to you. Apart from a smack in the face, you're worthless.
God Bless.

They had to know the rule on this one....
Delta flight returns to gate after travelers refuse to wear masksFrom CNN's Jennifer Selva
A Delta flight was forced to return to the gate when two of their customers wouldn’t wear masks, according to Delta Air Lines spokesperson Emma Protis.
Protis told CNN in an emailthat Flight 1227 on July 23 was on its way from Detroit to Atlanta when they were forced to turn around.
Delta released the following statement to CNN:
Flight 1227 from Detroit to Atlanta returned to the gate following two customers who were non-compliant with crew instructions. After a short delay, the aircraft departed to Atlanta."
The two passengers were removed from the plane, Protis said.
According to Delta's website, "Delta customers and employees are required to wear a face mask, or appropriate cloth face covering over their nose and mouth throughout their travel, aligning with best practice guidelines from the CDC."
So they just don’t go on the trip over this? Ok I guess....but damn.

I saw a fast food joint kick someone out for not wearing a shirt years ago. He left.
If you want to eat there you follow their rules. Not complex.
