Makes sense he wants a worthy opponent
7-month extension or they can do advance polling in Sept/Oct most people are decided anyways
While I don't support Trump I still feel hes going to win so it doesn't really matter. Better the devil you know and all that

Biden would be the only president that never had to debate. Which is fortunate, because he is almost as brain dead as you are.

Trump knows this election he isn't even going up against Biden...he's going up against covid...and he needs covid to go away to have any chance
It might be too late though...because old people have jumped ship from Trump thus Florida is pretty much a lock for Biden at this point...and no Republican has won POTUS without winning Florida in nearly 100 years...Trump needs Florida.

I am not sure about this but I read that Congress would have to do this for him. The Senate may be willing to but the House would not be cooperating.

Old people won’t leave trump. Not old white ones at least and there are an awful lot of them.
Anyway....obviously he can’t do it and needing congress means he needs the House....not that the senate would be a lock either.
Hes just laying his ground work in case he loses to say he’s been saying it’s rigged all along.

I would like to note that the polls being used are like 2,000 people with nothing better to do than answer phone calls from strangers and talk to them about their political beliefs.
See Clinton leading Trump by 10+ points 4 straight months before the election.
2,000 mentally challenged people are not a reflection of 330 million citizens.

You could also see the many many many many many times polls were right. Or that she got millions more votes which is what polls said should happen(the closest to being right was Rasmussen who trump loves who said she would win about 2 million more votes). 10 thousand here or there swinging the election doesn’t make the whole process incorrect. It makes nationwide polling mostly irrelevant.
The best way I can see is polling likely voters not just random Americans because more than half don’t vote. Which is why Rasmussen is generally closer than others. They recently had Trump from negative 19 in approval all the way up to even after he started wearing a mask. They have Biden up but barely. Like 3-5 points....again....nationwide.
Its closer than the usual polls show no doubt but that doesn’t mean the polls are somehow rigged. It means who gets the most votes doesn’t always win. Republicans have won that way 3 times I believe though no Democrat ever has.

If he loses he will absolutely blow a gasket and set records on Twitter. Whatever the most responded to tweet ever is he’s gonna top it that day(assuming it’s not already him). He will talk about contesting the results, recounts in close states, waiting for absentee and all that. I suspect Pelosi will play it like no big deal and just tweet inauguration details. The secret service doesn’t work for whoever sits on the office. If someone else swears in they work for him. He’s not about to be escorted out of the building by force. I think he would raise hell then leave early skipping the inauguration and hold a competing press conference at worst.

He suggested that it be done but didn't say he was going to do it. That being said it wouldn't shock me if he thinks he can. No president has ever been more ignorant about the limits of his authority.

In this way, Trump is an exact reflection of the typical American, particularly those who hate him.
For people who would support an unprecedented economic shut down and a “new normal” with 24/7 face coverings over a virus... you would think a delay to an election would be nothing to them. Whats a delayed election after all this country has done because of covid?? If this was anything BUT a Trump l election they would be demanding a delay. They would be crucifying anyone suggesting it shouldnt be delayed.
Those in the public who hate Trump mostly resent him because hes a successful version of what they are.

The president is also supposed to work with president-elect between election and inauguration day, showing him the ropes. Obama did that with Trump, as have all previous presidents. I suspect Trump may become an exception to that rule.

When has a previous president, any president from any party in American history, suggested delaying an election? We have had plenty of issues, civil war, world wars even but has any president before suggested delaying an election???

Of course he's going to resist and scream that the results are fake. If he loses, he's going to have the Greatest Meltdown in Twitter History (caps intentional). That much is in the bank. There's not much else he can do about it though. He's not going to lock himself and Melania in the Lincoln Bedroom and refuse to leave.

This is a pandemic in an election year. Trump haters are the ones telling everyone how dangerous it is. We just shut down the whole country for months over it.
If it’s still a problem right now, why not be cautious and postpone the election? We dont know when the virus will go away.
The answer, the ONLY answer, is because people want to gain as much as they can politically. When the virus helps, then push fear of the virus. When we need to ignore the virus, then its virus shmirus.
Massive hypocrisy but then again thats people.

If its about covid, delaying the election is pointless. The Dems will keep the covid hoax going for as long as is its needed.
If Biden wins, covid (and BLM) will get kicked to the curb instantly. No more use for it.
If Trump wins, its less clear what will happen. Maybe covid continues, or maybe the Dems move on to their next abomination. Perhaps another impeachment attempt.

And? People died in big numbers from the 1918 pandemic right? Isnt that the whole point? We need to learn from it and minimize the casualities. More social distancing.
Thats why rights have been stripped in unprecedented fashion. To “protect peoples health.”
But we cant delay an election a couple months?
Sounds hypocritical and disingenuous.

Postpone the election. Simple.

Obviously.
But if Congress wont do it after creating such a massive hysteria over the deadly and contagious nature of this virus... then it’s pretty obvious what the covid hysteria is really all about. And it makes the public look like a bunch of brain dead, dim witted sheep.
MILLIONS of Americans line up in the same place at the same time to vote.
Congress is really gonna put public safety in jeopardy that way over something that could easily be postponed until theres more certainty about the timeline of this horrific contagion?

You guys have garbage presidential candidates. The Philippines too. Trump made horrible decisions in the last few months of his presidency. Just like underestimating the coronavirus, and proclaiming that the virus was gone by Easter. Only reason trump was elected because people hates hilary, and russian "Helped"him during the elections. Joe Biden might be a short term president just like William Henry Harrison. Democrat needs to select a younger vice president that's going to help your country in the current global crisis. Trump is just a terrible politician. My cat is smarter than him. Only trolls and rednecks likes him.
Trump losing is not going to be the W that some are hoping for, and those same people might be better served in Trump winning now, so they are better equipped in 24.
The dems never accepted GWB or Trump while the GOP never accepted Clinton/ Obama. I don't know if the two are precisely equivalent but the Trump supporters will definitely not accept defeat

Presidents cant “fix” the perpetual problems caused by large numbers of bone headed people, which is what most countries are filled with. Trump’s job is to keep America secure and in general protect its freedoms. After sixteen years of constant “muslim terror” in the news cycle, weve hardly heard a peep under Trump. Hes tried to improve border security to protect American wage workers, despite resistance from Democrats. Same with reworked trade deals, despite resistance from Democrats. Hes tried to protect businesses with lower taxes and red tape. He signed criminal justice reform that reversed “racist” policies the left complained about for years.
This has taken power away from big global power players who use America as a puppet, and theyre the ones whove set him up to fail by using the media to wildly exaggerate “deadly viruses” and “endemic threats to black lives by police” in an election year.

Yep.
Trump is better than Biden for the American public in 2020-2024.
And someone else will be better than Biden for the American public in 2024-2028. But if they vote Biden in now, they may be stuck with him (or his VP shill) for 8 years.
If people want the Bush/Obama Oligarchy back in complete control over the country, go ahead and vote Biden.
Anyone else, shouldnt.
Naturally, tho, idiots like ItsMillerTime who complain about the establishment will vote Biden over Trump because hes the kind of guy whom the media targets for twisting his lil pea brain into a pretzel. He’s the kind of idiot the media can actually convince to fall for Orwellian Doublethink.

I don’t think I agree that Biden is a better choice if we’re talking long term. Trump will certainly be worse domestically and environmentally (he will still be terrible here tho), but Biden has a good chance of being worse foreign policy wise (i.e., starting more conflicts and/or wars). Trump winning again could lead to AOC in 2024 which is what the country actually needs. What I think we need are: green new deal, M4A, affordable housing, getting out of foreign conflicts, free public college, legalization of marijuana + freeing prisoners who were arrested on marijuana related charges, defunding (not abolishing before anyone screeches at me) the police and the pentagon, significantly raising the minimum wage, eliminating money from politics, protecting workers instead of corporations and serious criminal justice reform. Biden will do none of this, and then we get President Tucker Carlson winning in 2024. Long term I suspect it’s best if Trump wins and then AOC defeats whoever in 2024. I refuse to vote for Trump out of principal, but I won’t vote for Biden either based on the same principles. Both these men are truly evil, and we need to stop playing the establishment’s game. I truly hope AOC is able to run in 2024 (she turns 35 before the election) because America needs it.

I ask this quite seriously, why dont you just move to Canada or Europe?
I’m already researching the possibility for myself, but obviously my plans are contingent on different political goals than yours.
The current American population cannot sustain a welfare state. Our population lacks the accountability, culture, and national unity necessary. It will collapse spectacularly. Nobody would be more glad to eat crow on the issue than I would, but being objective is a necessity.
People in small homogeneous countries already have the ability to take care of themselves; they socialize many aspects of society as a matter of convenience; NOT necessity. This is a huge point you are underestimating. You are seeking to socialize as a CURE for problems rooted deep in history, culture, and aptitude. That will not he sustainable.
I realize you disagree, which isnt my point. My point is Ill move away IF I see us shifting toward policies that will lead to collapse. But you seemingly disagree with the policies CURRENTLY in place. So why not move away?

Its not about affording them in the short term.
It’s about the lack of motivation it will create among people to contribute in the long term. We do not have a healthy culture of pride and accountability in this country. Nationalism is a value in other countries, here it is a swear word. Child rearing is a responsibility in other countries. Here in BabyMamaville, single parenting is celebrated.
People in other countries no longer need to be taught to be independent and productive and responsible. It’s already part of the culture. Thats not the reality here.
In fact, we have a case in point in front of our very eyes. Americans are getting beefy coronavirus welfare checks right now, and where are they?
In the streets rioting.
Your guarantee of a welfare state will lead to a dissolution of structure and productivity, and will result in a lawless wild west of young brown people running around in rival gangs. You clearly haven’t been paying attention. People are unable to pay their rents and afford basic things because congress refuses to pass legislation that would create an actual safety net during a literal pandemic. This applies to both the Democrats and the Republicans in Congress. Outside of a few progressives in the Democratic Party, both sides are much more focused on bailing out corporations. I’m not sure why you’re under the impression treating the working class like human beings entails a “welfare state” but capitalism has done quite a number on you. It’s funny you start shrieking about me needing to grow up when I suggest we enact common sense policies AOC (one of the few politician who isn’t bought and paid for, although that of course could change) would fight for if she was in the Oval Office. It’s not about being “woke”, in fact I have come to detest cancel culture and political correctness, I’m an firm believer in altruism and equality. Every country you point to as a model, has a much stricter immigration policy than we do, and that is WHY their workers are better able to make a living across the board. That is the most fundamental obstacle to wealth parity. The supply leverage of workers.
EVERY country you clap for has that in place. America has been different, thus our results have been different.
But I havent heard you make a peep about left wing attempts to stymie Trump’s efforts to bring us up to speed there. Your crowd wants to keep that moral authority, EVEN when it’s an impediment to your other supposed goals.
That kind of hypocrisy wont work.

No, Ive heard you say youre “against open borders,” as many to the left do as a general buffer against accusations of being an obvious hypocrite.
And Ive heard you criticize all the ways Trump has tried to address immigration.
But I havent heard you speak up about how illegal immigrations laws SHOULD be enforced? Which, if you oppose open borders, is kinda the important part.
Just saying “no open borders, u guys!” doesnt stop anyone from overstaying their welcome.
How do you propose we improve enforcement?

I don’t know what the best solution is for America. A wall could be the answer, but Trump had no chance of bipartisan support given the language he used. Democrats are highly concerned with optics; they will not support a plan with xenophobic messaging, even if the plan has merit. What I disagree with is the way Trump and previous presidents have dehumanized illegal immigrants. Not providing vaccinations to them at their camps is just pointlessly cruel. That is what I disagree with Trump on, I don’t disagree with his view that illegal immigration is a problem...I disagree with his treatment of illegal immigrants. There should be a path to citizenship, and in an ideal society, there would be open borders, but that is not feasible as long as we live in the kind of capitalist society we live in. I would propose we treat illegal immigrants with respect and not break up families. Provide them adequate shelter and healthcare and better facilities and let them know they can apply for citizenship legally.

You can't have Medicare for all without people funding it. Ie pay more taxes.
Refugees and immigrants ruin these systems in every country they arrive in.
You can't just give free degrees to everyone because then they're worthless also.
Who funds these affordable housing projects? The tax payer. Then they are filled up with scumbags usually and turn into slums.

I dont know what vaccination controversy youre referring to with immigrants, but speaking generally, giving the five-star treatment to people breaking laws youre asking them not to break, wont get results. Inviting them to disrespect you by being a push over wont get results.
Sometimes you have to actually punish people if they break a rule.
Otherwise it kinda doesnt work.

Yeesh, even the founder of the Federalist Society has turned on Trump https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/30/politics/federalist-society-trump-election-mail-in-voting/index.html
The co-founder of the conservative Federalist Society said Thursday in a blistering New York Times op-ed that President Donald Trump's tweet musing about a delay to November's presidential election is grounds for impeachment.
Steven Calabresi, a Northwestern University law professor who has offered broad defenses of the President in recent years, wrote, "I am frankly appalled by the president's recent tweet seeking to postpone the November election. Until recently, I had taken as political hyperbole the Democrats' assertion that President Trump is a fascist."
"But this latest tweet is fascistic and is itself grounds for the president's immediate impeachment again by the House of Representatives and his removal from office by the Senate," he said.
It's a significant break from the co-founder of one of the most influential groups in Republican politics. The Federalist Society has emerged as a leading conservative and libertarian voice in recent years, urging a limited role for judges in society's problems.
The group has also worked closely with Republican administrations to influence the selection of judges. Its leaders advised the George W. Bush administration on appointments and, for Trump, have become an even closer partner in screening candidates for the bench.
The scathing assessment comes hours after Trump explicitly floated delaying November's election in a tweet claiming without evidence that the contest will be flawed.
Trump has no authority to delay an election, and the Constitution gives Congress the power to set the date for voting. Lawmakers from both parties said almost immediately that there was no likelihood the election would be delayed.
"President Trump needs to be told by every Republican in Congress that he cannot postpone the federal election," Calabresi wrote. "Doing so would be illegal, unconstitutional and without precedent in American history. Anyone who says otherwise should never be elected to Congress again."
The op-ed, paired with an array of meaningful pushback on Trump from congressional Republicans on Thursday, offers a rare look at the limits on loyalty to the President within the GOP when it comes to defending his more extreme political urges.
Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican and Trump ally, told CNN when asked about the President's call to delay the election: "I don't think that's a particularly good idea."
And Majority Whip Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, a member of Republican leadership, told CNN that there will be an election in November despite the President's tweet.
"I think that's probably a statement that gets some press attention, but I doubt it gets any serious traction," Thune said. "I think we've had elections every November since about 1788, and I expect that will be the case again this year."
Even with scores of Republicans openly challenging Trump's tweet, Calabresi's op-ed stand outs as a striking defection given his long history in the GOP. While he's offered some criticism of the President in the past, Calabresi has gained significant notoriety in recent years for his forceful repudiations of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation as well as Trump's impeachment over his conduct with Ukraine.

In fact, I guarantee you Trump and his voting base are 1000% willing to be consistent on the issue.
Either we drop the corona hysteria, return to normal, and keep the election on time...
Or we show the necessary concern for vulnerable people, and not ask them to congregate together in polling places until the pandemic is completely resolved or alternate steps can be taken to ensure everyone can vote safely.
It has to be one or the other. Or else it's completely obvious this WHOLE THING is political.
Take your pick. Or just disappear from the thread. But you're not worming your way out of this with mental gymnastics.
Easy
Mail in ballots?
Problem solved...you're welcome.

Yeesh, even the founder of the Federalist Society has turned on Trump https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/30/politics/federalist-society-trump-election-mail-in-voting/index.html
If Trump’s tweet is fascist, then state and federal shut downs were fascist. It’s simple.
Go ahead and think he’s a fascist if you want. But you cant pick and choose. It has to be consistent.
It cant be “Democrats are allowed to bend the Constitution over, bc public health, but Trump isnt allowed, bc um, fascist.”
Just pick. Either or both. Not “some politicians are more equal than others.”
Show us you arent a partisan sheep.
Or just confirm to us that you are.
It’s up to you, JtotheIzzo.
Show us what ya got big guy.

Obviously medicare for all is totally whack... I mean why should I be forced to participate in a health system where I have to subsidize the health costs of the rest of society?
Our current system of private insurance is much better... where I subsidize the health costs of the rest of society, AND I also pay for parasitic insurance middlemen who extract billions from our healthcare system while providing absolutely nothing of value
Ok pay 35-45% income tax to fund all these services then like the other counties who have them..
Enjoy that when the unemployed use all the services for free

Between taxes, insurance premiums, and the endless out of pocket costs, americans currently pay FAR more per capita for healthcare for any other nation on earth (its not even close, only switzerland and norway are remotely comparable)... I will gladly pay more income tax if that means saving tons of money overall because my net cost was brought down to something like what France or Japan are paying (less than half of what americans currently pay)
In addition to the fact that M4A would bring costs way down for individuals, it has other benefits as well. My family runs a small business and we offer a healthcare plan to our employees. For the company, the average cost per month per employee is well over 1k (and the employees have to contribute like ~300-500/month too, depending on what "quality" of private insurance plan they choose). Removing that burden would help our company (and others) tremendously.

Part of the reason we pay so much is we're so unhealthy. Not to mention we have so much "dead weight" who aren't contributing to the economy, but whose medical bills get passed on to the people who are paying.
Personally, I don't want to pay these people's health care:

People can call me whatever they want. I don't want the income I earn to be used for sustaining these folks. I would rather spend it on my own family and community, and myself. Period. And I dont apologize for feeling that way.
I know your point is that "we're already paying for them regardless." And my point is... we shouldnt be. Rather than 'formalizing' our subsidy of these people, we should remove our 'informal' subsidy of them. And tell them good riddance.
So, difference of opinion obviously. But this is where my side is coming from at any rate.

I dont want to pay for unhealthy people either... just like I dont want to pay for the thousands of bombs we drop on impoverished shepherds in Yemen and Afghanistan, or for the woke propaganda factories that were once known as universities, or for enormous tax breaks for the 0.01% oligarchs who own yachts and private planes, or for $600/week in unemployment benefits for people who dont want to work during a fake pandemic... or countless other things.
Thats beside the point tho. In every developed nation on this planet you pay taxes, and those taxes pay for social services like healthcare, the military, education, welfare... etc. There is not a single developed nation on this planet that does not have some kind of healthcare system where the citizens collectively pay into a pool and some inevitably benefit more than others. What makes the US different from all of those other countries, is that in addition to paying into a pool, we ALSO pay for worthless parasitic insurance middlemen who extract billions from the system for themselves while making patients and doctors jump through all kinds of unnecessary hoops in order to get the care they need.
Anyway, if you want to live in a society that doesnt have social services funded by taxes, there are some countries that offer that - maybe try Somolia or Libya.

Yeah and when you're the one paying mega taxes every year then you see all the people abusing the system in commission housing, welfare payments and non stop dr and hospital visits cause it's "free" clogging the system you will change your tune quickly..
I'm all for those people having access to the medical service like the dr, but pay a small fee when they visit seeing as they contribute nothing to the service. It's the same in all counties with Medicare for all..

This goes both ways. There have been numerous massive fraud busts regarding medicare and medicaid in recent years. People are always trying to cheat the system from every angle.
Bureaucracy is like a game of Jenga. The higher you stack it, the less stable it is. Of course socialized medicine is more manageable in Switzerland. You have 4,000,000 educated, “privileged” white people. The US is 370,000,000 yahoos. Good luck.
Incidentally my uncle lives in Switzerland, where his wife is a banker. She was born in Turkey and holds Turkish citizenship, and they plan to retire to Turkey where they will get much more bang for their buck. He said that even tho the Swiss do have a good system for taking care of the elderly etc, it’s simply expensive af to be there, and if you wanna do anything besides sit in a rocker all day, youre better off elsewhere.
So, there are definitely tradeoffs either way. But most importantly, IMO, if you think we can just make America into Switzerland, you need to have a look around at the average American.
And as far as moving to Somalia or Libya...
Why bother? We’re already moving those countries here.

Despite the undeniable fact that US citizens currently pay more than twice as much per capita on healthcare as citizens in countries like the UK, France, Germany and Japan... some americans are still unable to see the truth thats directly in front of their eyes.

The people who are getting screwed are working class americans who earn too much to qualify for medicaid but dont have a $250k emergency savings fund to help cover the costs of something like a cancer diagnosis.
The only differences between what I am calling for and what we have right now, is that with my system private insurance parasites cease to exist and middle class americans save money.

The Federalist society is pissed:
A co-founder of the Federalist Society, which famously compiled a list from which President Trump (https://www.foxnews.com/category/person/donald-trump) selected his two Supreme Court nominees, described the president's Thursday tweet (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/30/opinion/trump-delay-election-coronavirus.html) about "delay[ing] the election (https://www.foxnews.com/category/politics/2020-presidential-election) until people can properly, securely and safely vote" as grounds for "immediate impeachment."
Northwestern University Law Professor Steven Calabresi wrote in a New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/30/opinion/trump-delay-election-coronavirus.html) opinion piece published late Thursday that Trump "should be removed unless he relents" the sentiment expressed in the tweet.
https://cf-images.us-east-1.prod.boltdns.net/v1/static/694940094001/e6316013-9bd1-41fd-8527-786bb534cedc/002520a2-d884-4f5c-939e-f1aa1194ab90/1280x720/match/image.jpgVidCalabresi said he voted for Trump in 2016, and has voted Republican in every presidential election since 1980. He added that he staunchly defended Trump against what he called an "unconstitutional investigation by Robert Mueller" into alleged collusion with Russia and penned another op-ed opposing the president's impeachment earlier this year. (http://video.foxnews.com/v/6176810107001)
"But I am frankly appalled by the president’s recent tweet seeking to postpone the November election," he wrote. "Until recently, I had taken as political hyperbole the Democrats’ assertion that President Trump is a fascist.
STIREWALT ON TRUMP SUGGESTING ELECTION DELAY: 'FLAGRANT EXPRESSION OF WEAKNESS' (https://www.foxnews.com/media/trump-delay-election-tweet-stirewalt)
"But this latest tweet is fascistic and is itself grounds for the president’s immediate impeachment again ... and his removal from office by the Senate."
In the tweet, Trump slammed the prospect of mass mail-in voting as a prelude to the "most inaccurate and fraudulent election in history" and a "great embarrassment to the USA."
Calabresi emphasized that the U.S. "has never canceled or delayed a presidential election. Not in 1864, when President Abraham Lincoln was expected to lose and the South looked as if it might defeat the North. Not in 1932 in the depths of the Great Depression. Not in 1944 during World War II."

The professor went on to say that the date of each election is fixed by an 1845 federal law and noted it is up to each state to determine whether they will implement universal mail-in voting, since "Article II of the Constitution explicitly gives the states total power over the selection of presidential electors."
Meanwhile, Calabresi called on "every Republican in Congress" to inform Trump that postponing the election would be "illegal, unconstitutional, and without precedent in American history.
"Anyone who says otherwise should never be elected to Congress again."

His only plan now is to discredit the election process.
