The judge has determined that Uber and Lyft must classify their workers as employees. Uber and Lyft says that is problematic and it will require them to rearrange their system and business model. So they'll have to shut down until November, in California. Funny how the drivers complained and if they shut down they won't be able to drive. Be careful what you wish for.

Not sure how a person who operates a piece of equipment under their own authority and can pick and choose which fares they want to take, and hours they want to work, is an employee and not a contractor but. .

Instacart and doordash are affected too. They all are hoping their ballot measure passes in November to continue allowing them to do business as usual. If it fails their whole system goes to shit. They'll probably have to develop a system in California where the driver pays Uber or Lyft directly, and customer pays driver.

Yikes, this is more than just restructuring because now they'll have to pay payroll taxes since they're no longer hiring 1099 independent contractors.

Last I heard they were all struggling financially.

Now the unemployment rate will quadruple because all these basement dwellers have to stop doing car rides

And the governor can chalk it up to COVID related unemployment and then point to the figure as he asks for more federal funds. It's no problem.
