I do like the tournament style but better to have travel and real fans for atmosphere.

Could you see the nba doing this bubble scenario permanently though? Fans allowed after covid but one location playoffs.

Thoughts?

Never. For one owners would not approve of it because it would mean transferring playoff ticket revenue to Disney World. Maybe the NBA could set up a scheme to remit revenue back to the "home" team but that wouldn't work well in practice. If you live in a metro area you can easily go watch your home team play and come back home the same night. You don't need to buy plane tickets, a hotel room, etc. that going to Orlando would tell. Plus, to the extent people traveled to Orlando, it would be for the bigger series. I don't think many people would be traveling to see the Nets get swept. Finally, what is the capacity at Disney? They won't be able to sell 20,000 tickets like NBA arenas.

Other issues would be opposition because it would render seeding almost meaningless by eliminating HCA, it would keep players away from friends and families for the playoff.

I do think the play in game concept may survive. By putting the cut-off at 4 games to 8th it keeps the season alive for two dozen teams (22 teams made it but if you had that in place a team like the Bulls would have a shot at getting to within 4 in a full season) and would discourage tanking as a result.

The bubble has been a big success but they aren't going to use it unless they have to.

In addition to some of the other points that have been made... You have to take into account ancillary revenue that goes beyond the cost of gate entry (merchandise, food, beer, 50-50 tickets etc). Also... There's major discrepancies in ticket prices from city to city. Big market teams would never be able to recoup the profits that they typically accrue.

You don't host a bubble tournament unless you absolutely have to.

The bubble has been a great mechanism for getting us to this point, but its not a viable long-term solution. The game was meant to be played in front of an audience and its definitely missing that.

OP is indicating that the bubble would include a fan presence, which brings about another flaw that just came to mind... A one stop shop bubble system precludes any semblance of a home court. Thus eliminating a major incentivizing component for competing in the regular season.

Home court advantage can be replaced with a number of things though. For example, getting possession at the start of every quarter in game 7.

If doing the one location permanently, perhaps they can do a PPV model. Where fans would pay per game/series/whole playoff and indicate which team they're buying for. The proceeds would then go to that team.

nah, we need home court advantage to achieve the best basketball possible

Good replies everyone.

Was thinking players probably prefer no travel and pay less tax for games played in Florida?

But many other disproportionate negatives it seems.

I wonder how much the play in success was just interest after the long break, a R.O.Y, and Portland.

Good storylines this year with phoenix but who cares usually and probably better to be in thr lottery?

It is still terrible, no ticket, no merchandise, items to sell at the stadium really kills it.

So i've heard that the league is still planning to conduct a second bubble for the last 8 teams that didn't qualify due to their mediocre standings. Will it still push through if ever?
