Looking back at those rosters it was nothing spectacular. The only difference between that team and any other was the goat teamwork

If you had to tear off the players on the team, how would you tier them?

They were not stacked yet still made the finals a total of five times somehow?

Dennis Johnson was a finals mvp and led 50 something win teams in Phoenix after that....while also being something like a 8-9 time all D teamer, and an all nba first teamer....

People don’t even list him as part of that teams big 3.

The team was stacked....just not more stacked than it’s competitors because it was pre expansion.

That shouldn't be a surprise. The 2015 or 2016 warriors weren't stacked in the traditional sense either but were so GOAT in terms of ball movement that they broke the season win record and won championship. GOAT team assists and offense/defense combo from them. Teamwork matters.

Ainge put up all star numbers on a bad team. Former all stars in Wedman, Paxson and Walton on their bench. McHale came off the bench at one team too. Tiny Archibald...

Ainge put up all star numbers on a bad team.

He also was an actual all-star in 88' on a 57 win Celtics team.

The thing is individually they were not that impressive minus Bird. The 2018 warriors had curry AND Durant. Two potential top 10 players on the same team. That’s insane

McHale was arguably the best low post player. Johnson was one of the top defenders. Parish was a top big as well. They had plenty

That’s what I think also. Goat teamwork but the talent doesn’t blow everyone out of the water

How can you look at the '86 Celtics roster and not say "stacked".

Bird - MVP, best player in the league at the time
McHale - Top 5-10 player in the NBA, just hit his prime
Parish - NBA All-Star in '86
DJ - All-Star the year before, All-Defensive 2nd Team in '86
Ainge - 15/4/5 on 55 fg% in the '86 postseason, played the 2, but could handle the rock if necessary
Walton - 6MOY in '86, elite rebounder & rim protector in his limited minutes on the floor

Before the 2017 Warriors came along, they had the best blend of talent and chemistry the league had ever seen. They basically had 2 All-NBA players, an All-Star, a borderline All-Star (DJ), one of the greatest role players of his era in Ainge, and the 6MOY. How is that not stacked?

They were stacked in '86, the year they managed to stay healthy. Walton and Wedman were excellent 6th and 7th men and Sichting was a decent #8.

5 Hall of Famers. Arguable top-5 player, top-6 power forward and top-20 center all time. Perhaps the most stacked team ever.

If that's not a stacked team I don't know what is

Watching many games from that '86 team, I don't think I've ever seen a player hit so many uncontested mid-range shots than Sichting, if you left him open from 16-20 feet it was over.

Courtesy of steve kerr for pioneering that team to a potential dynasty.
