View Full Version : Communist Heroes of the Present: Assata Shakur
A member of the Black Panthers and later the Black Liberation Army, Shakur is also a communist. She strongly believed in revolutionary action to combat the oppressive structures of American society. In 1973, she and some of her friends were stopped by police for a broken tail light and slightly speeding (but also likely due to being racially profiled, let’s be honest). When the police found guns in their vehicle they attempted to arrest her and her friends. A shootout ensued, as Shakur was not about to let the pigs execute her for being black. She was convicted, but she escaped prison with the help of some friends and has lived in Cuba since 1984, as they have granted her asylum. She has since become a writer and an English language editor for Radio Havana Cuba. Her refusal to let cops treat herself become another case of police brutality has made her a heroine to many and she continue to be an example of the bravery of communists.
Fun fact: Assata was very close friends with Tupac’s mother and was known as his godmother. Undoubtedly her revolutionary history inspired much of Tupac’s beliefs.

No wonder people like OP and a majority of Blacks are in the shape they're in. They idolize murderers.

•Who did she murder? Self-defense isn’t murder.
•I wouldn’t talk about the “shape” anyone else is in if I weighed as much as you do...

For someone innocent, she sure has been on the run for quite some time. She should come back to the States and prove her innocence.
I speak of the shape you and Blacks are in cause clearly this way of thinking hasn't quite worked out that well for you guys.

The corrupt criminal justice system obviously didn’t give her a fair trial because she was a black communist. She refuses to go to jail for simply defending herself, so she moved to a better, more fair and equal country (Cuba).

Oops. Yeah female communists are definitely the way to go then.

She divorced her husband in 1970. I’m sure she has had boyfriends since, though I’m not sure why you care: are you thinking of asking her out? She’s 73 years old but maybe you’re into old women...

Hope she can feed herself over there with that feminst love she receives.
Born in Flushing, Queens, she grew up in New York City and Wilmington, North Carolina. After she ran away from home several times, her aunt, who would later act as one of her lawyers, took her in. She became involved in political activism at Borough of Manhattan Community College and City College of New York. After graduation, she began using the name Assata Shakur, and briefly joined the Black Panther Party. She then joined the BLA, a loosely knit offshoot of the Black Panthers, which was engaged in an armed struggle against the US government through tactics such as robbing banks and killing police officers and drug dealers.
Between 1971 and 1973, she was charged with several crimes and was the subject of a multi-state manhunt. In May 1973, Shakur was arrested after being wounded in a shootout on the New Jersey Turnpike. Also involved in the shootout were New Jersey State Troopers Werner Foerster and James Harper and BLA members Sundiata Acoli and Zayd Malik Shakur. Harper was wounded; Zayd was killed; Foerster was killed by Acoli. Between 1973 and 1977, Shakur was charged with murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, bank robbery, and kidnapping in relation to the shootout and six other incidents.
