erik spoelstra is a hall of fame coach. It is hard to say he isn't a great coach at this point. If he doesn't count as an elite coach, basically you are saying Phil Jackson, Gregg Popovich and Larry Brown are the only coaches that have counted as elite in recent NBA history. Spoelstra is certainly on the level of Doc Rivers or Steve Kerr.

He couldn't get out the first round with peak Wade.

With rookie/sophomore Beasley as 2nd best player.

I wouldn't say that's any indictment on his coaching abilities, those teams outside of Wade were absolute garbage. Sure, maybe they should've beaten Atlanta, but no way in hell were they gonna beat Boston :lol

And? If he's an elite coach and he had peak Wade...
Do you know the level of shit that would be tossed LeBron's way if he lost in the first round at his peak with an "elite coach", regardless of his supporting cast?
He took that shit show 07 Cavs to the ****ing Finals and he caught shit for THAT... lol.
Lol... lol.

Exactly my point. He is a good coach but not an elite coach.

They didn't clear 50 wins in either year. An elite coach like PJ, Pop, Riley, etc. would get them a better record and they wouldn't draw Boston in the first place.
He is a good coach. There is a reason he has kept his job so long. He just isn't PJ, Pop, Riley, Red, etc.
The reason this comes up is every other top 10 all-time player had a top tier coach at some point so he winds up getting compared to what those other guys had.

Phil didn't clear 50 wins or get out of the first round with peak Kobe when he had a similar level roster to coach either

Spoelstra is great now. Not Phil otr pop but top 5 right now. Vogel’s pretty good, Indiana was a good run but don’t think he’s top 5. Lue is wait and see with next job but certainly not bad for now.

True--but compare what the two coaches did when they lost their best player--and Spo had the advantage of having the time to sign not just a quality starter but a 2-time all-star to replace LeBron.

The 07 Cavs were a notch better than the 09 and 10 Heat. Also James is a better player than Wade, so that actually helps the notion that Spoelstra is a good coach.

07 LeBron was absolutely not a better player than 09 Wade.

Individually not, but James has been better using his teammates all his career. Don't think Wade makes the finals in his place in 07.
