Probably one of the main reasons why the Miami Heat lost in the first round of the playoffs. Just 2 seasons ago he was an all nba first team. He still averaged 17.4 ppg in the regular season, but got shut down by the knicks defense in the playoffs. Great series by the way.

Yeah he let them down. Zo unfairly got the blame as he often did for those Heat teams not going further in the playoffs.

Yeah, he shot 27% in the playoffs in 99' and it didn't get better from there. 29%, 22%, 33% (final PO run).

Underrated player. As you noted, good enough to be first team all-NBA, he was top 5 in MVP in 97' as well. Unfortunately, he, like Mitch Richmond is largely forgotten today.

It was payback for him shitting on an undermanned Knicks team in 97. Knicks matched up better than most years against the Bulls that year and of course the Heat had to cockblock that rivalry. Knicks didn't lose to the Heat again in the playoffs until Lebron.

Knicks' fault for getting their best players all suspended while leading the series 3-1. ; )

It probably doesn't help that he had a more famous and better (peak anyway) contemporary with the same surname.

That is true but the NBA wanted to make the Bulls road easy. Heat were sacrificial lambs, the Knicks did well against the Bulls that year if I remember correctly. Not that they would have beat them, they never did except barely without MJ but they would have made it a war. But it was not to be. A long line of disappointment as a Knicks fan.

True. He also played in a great era for PG's with Stockton, Isiah, Price, Johnson, Payton, Penny, Magic (briefly) all overlapping with his prime so it was harder for any given PG to stick out. Stockton is remembered because of his longevity but GM's preferred Johnson over him 2:1 in the early 90's when both were healthy and in their primes. Penny because of the "next MJ"/"Lil Penny" marketing push.

Some of it was karma for the Knicks' thuggery throughout the 90's. If this happened with two other teams the punishment likely wouldn't have been as severe but this was the Knicks with their Riley-era DNA still strong (JVG was a Riley assistant) and the Knicks 2.0 where Riley had gone to become the GM & coach.
