But whatever Wilt had in him that made him special Dawkins just didn’t. And Darryl could shoot outside a bit too. Greatness is just hard to quantify and nail down. Being a gm with guys like that in a workout must suck . How do you not draft him? Back when everyone Wanted a guy who was too big/strong/athletic to play though?

He might literally tear the rim off

or go for the highlight and turn it over

Never know.

You would figure nobody could handle him once you got some solid coaching into him.

Those guys cost so many jobs.... but somehow you still can’t blame teams for believing. Mo Bamba just keeps getting drafted....

Shaq personality wise but he wasn’t all that big. He was big just now Shaq big. He was like a natural 260 all muscle but jumping out the gym. Some of his blocks and rebounds had people thinking Wilt too. Especially some of the people who thought Wilt was just bigger and more athletic than everyone. Dawkins was probably the first guy in that next generation to show people it wasn’t that simple.

People still haven't figured out it's not that simple. Even today. 2020. In short? People are stupid.

If I had a nickel for every time someone, even adults, mind you... said to me, while I was growing up... that Shaq was only good because he was just bigger than everyone... I would have a shitload of nickels. Probably at least $20 worth of nickels, to be honest.

I mean... that was the main reason he was so good lol.

Darryl is a freak athlete and look how much bigger Shaq is.

See what I mean?

:facepalm

It's definitely NOT the main reason. Sigh.

You know there are literally thousands of people running around the world that are as big as Shaq?

edit: quick google search... just under 3000 7 footers in the world.

Know how many of them could do what he did in the NBA?

Zero.

There definitely arent that many people on earth as big and strong as Shaq. Most 7 foot people have health problems and are gangly and disporportionate Boban or Shawn Bradley types. Shaq is in a class of his own for his size and strength. Even the world's strongest guys that win all those strongman competitions lifting stones ussually top out at 6'4-6'5. Shaq is legit well over 7 feet tall, those guys wouldn't be able to guard him for shit because they dont have the height to match the strength. His combo is super rare and the driving force for the type of player he was.

Isn’t that rare for giant people to be freakishly strong. In fact a great many of them throughout history we’re in freak shows showing their strength not just their size. Giants flipping cars or holding 6 men wasn’t unusual strength wise. Even some of the creaky Frankenstein looking ones were strong. Shaw’s was unusual for having the coordination of a normal human at his size. That’s where he would be one in a billion.

People like Shaq are supposed to be strong. They aren’t supposed to move like this:
