how any "superstars" or "all time greats" would be just average players if travelling was actually called?

Peak versions of all 3 of those players could do too much on defense to be average even if you knocked 10-15ppg off their averages. But of course many fans think basketball is only what happens when you’re trying to score one on one.

with all the switching happening on defense, how can you really measure their defensive impact?

Giannis and peak Lebron are both at least 4 position defenders with 5 vs the right matchups and Ewing didn’t play a switch everything era. I’m not judging his defense vs a league he didn’t train to play against.

For the leagues they played in all 3 were elite defenders. That alone makes them better than average even if you take away their various violation based points.

since when has being an "elite defender" alone ever made a player a superstar?

if travels were called properly, Lebron and Giannis would be turnover machines. (well, Lebron is already a bit of a turnover machine)

What is an average NBA player anyway? It probably means a solid bench player.

doesn't have to be a bench player. there are plenty of starters that are average skill level players.

Since when?

About 1957.

But did I even say they would be superstars off defense alone?

you can find TONS of examples of this from Lebron.

how does an NBA player travel like this? i don't think i could do this if i tried. my understanding of the rules would not allow me to and i'd end up just putting up something just to avoid travelling.

does he not know the rules? is he that dumb that he can't count? is he so uncoordinated that he can't control it?

what is it?

It's legal in the fiba and nba rules. It's called the zero step rule.

Their offensive production would hurt if rules were actually implemented, but not to the degree that you may be thinking. Many superstars are resilient and would adjust to the circumstance. If LeBron doesn't average 25 ppg but averages 23-24, he'd still be a superstar. If Giannis puts up 27 instead of 29, he'd still be a superstar.

The only player that I think would be greatly impacted by rules being implemented and the league not catering to them is probably James Harden. And even with him, he goes from averaging 34 ppg to what, 28-29? He'd still be a superstar in the league.

Not even basketball, says the loser who has thousands of posts and 6 years of life spent on a "not even basketball" message board.

Beyond parody.

so you're saying Lebron travels because they don't call it and that he would adjust if they started calling it? WTF?

Watch the olympics. They all adjust. 2-3 a game wouldn’t keep them from being stars.

Spanoulis outscored and outplayed Lebron in the FIBA 2006 Semi-Finals Championship game... leading Greece to the win and USA to another Bronze medal. Lebron shot 0-4 from 3, and 1-4 from the line. He was a 30 PPG player in the NBA at the time. Best player for USA? Melo. Who had by far the game high. That USA team featured Chris Paul, Dwayne Wade, Lebron James, and Melo. And they lost to a bunch of no names Greek team. Spanoulis player of the game couldn't even score 5 PPG in the NBA. And yet? On a nuetral stage embarrasses HOF NBA competition. Manu did the same thing in 2004.

What it comes down to is the NBA is a WWE league. There are plenty of players, especially in the new crop, that are much better athletes than they are basketball players ~ the westbrooks, giannis's, and lebrons. Even Wade to an extent. They wouldn't be acclaimed anywhere near what they are here, in a league that didn't just promote athleticism.

imagine if they called travels on Lebronze and Giannis and they had to rely on their perimeter and their (non-existent) post up or mid range game? LMFAO

they'd be able to build 2 more schools for their hoods with all those bricks
