View Full Version : Is the GOAT criteria at least 10 Finals? LBJ, Kareem, and Russell only three to do it

Is this a good starting point when assessing who is the league's GOAT (Greatest Of All Time).

10 Finals is a great starting point in my mind:

LeBron
Russell
Kareem

Anyone that wants to contend for top 3 GOAT needs at least 10 Finals, we need a consistent performer that does not have a lot if any first round exits.

Russell and LeBron are the only ones with zero 1st round exits among all top 20 players.
And they both have 10 Finals. The top 3 is locked as far as I'm concerned.

LeBron
Russell
Kareem

If you have a 1st round exit and don't have at least 10 Finals you do not qualify.

Why did MJ only make 6 Finals while the top 3 GOATS Kareem, LeBron, and Russell all made at least 10?

Lack of impact, dedication, and Longevity

He's lucky he made 6, and only because he had the best supporting cast and coach every single year of his career and horrible comp.

10 > 6

I can't believe you could down grade three LeBron Finals losses to MJ 1st round losses and he would still have 7 to 6 Finals :lol

Nice top 3 list. How many of those are serial floppers? Embarrassing flops to boot.

Making it is all that really matters. Winning the championship isn't that important. Its kind of like making an all-star team or pro-bowl. No one really cares if your team actually won the game or not, just making it was the accomplishment.

The 90's Bills love this type of thinking.

They're one of the GOAT teams now.

Not when Lebron played in the LEastern Conference for 9 of those & barely faced any stars/above-average offenses to make it there.

Four consecutive superbowl appearances has never been done. I guess they're one of the GOAT teams.

GOAT conversations need to start with Finals MVP, since that goes to the best performing player on the championship winning team. Five players have 3 or more, Jordan 6, Magic 3, LeBron 3, Shaq 3 and Duncan 3. If there was one metric, that should be the one.

You could have multiple rings, but was never the best player (Horry). You can have multiple MVPs but never even been to the Finals (Nash, Giannis).

Russell would certainly have the most, no?

They didn't start giving the award until 1969, which was the last year Russell won a chip. The FMVP went to Jerry West that year, even tho his team lost, which suggests Russell wasn't the star of that series.

Russell was old in his last season. He would have won 8+ FMVP's if they were awarded during his career.
