howard appeared in only nine games last season after joining Washington, quickly undertaking spinal surgery that november ending his season and likely NBA career. the lost superman had become a punchline who'd burned through six teams since his previous tour with the 2013 Lakers. 12 months ago nobody in the league wanted to give him a chance. a last-ditch deal by a Lakers team that had waited too long for Kawhi and was stuck rounding up the leftover scraps of a barren marketplace. even Lakers were extremely timid in negotiations giving him a strict non-guaranteed 1 year. Dwight was effectively being paid a day to day "summer league contract" until a mid-season deadline to guarantee his full 2.7m vet min deal for the remainder of the season. if the Lakers at any point prior to Jan. 7 had wanted to cut ties with Howard, they could've done so without paying him another dollar.

dwight persuaded the Lakers he would be a strong supporting player and a good teammate during summer workouts and he's done exactly that. not only has dwight become LA's best locker room guy, he's arguably been the most disruptive bench piece to opposing teams in these playoffs. after not seeing a single minute to Rockets small ball, Howard rightfully earned himself a starting spot over Mcgee after becoming a nightmare to Jokic and now Adebayo.

dwight unlike many cocky young players who peaked early, has learned harder than anyone how valuable it is to make just one Finals. 15 seasons and finally finding peace in his nba career as a role player, savoring each minute of floor time on a championship team
