PS4 brought me back to enjoying gaming again like I did as a kid (SNES-PS1). I got heaps more use out of PS4 than I did with PS2-PS3

IMO it wasn't the graphical leap, but the story writing and narrative heavy single player improvement. AAA and 1st party exclusives today can feel like you're reading a good book or immersed in a movie. PS2-PS3 for me was mostly sports titles vs friends and first person shooters, fun games but had little depth.

Dozens of classics, what were your favs?

The worst era. Infatuated with "realism", games were filled with loading screens and "realistic" mechanics capping games at 30fps.

I couldn't finish any of the Yakuza games. Couldn't finish Ghost of Tushima. Couldn't finish God of War. I had to WILL myself to finish the Persona 5 games and nier automata, been a fan too long not to but it was a pain in the ass rather than an enjoyable experience. All have great stories but so much time was spent idle waiting for my dedicated hardware to load my game every 5 minutes. Picking up the controller on days I have something to take care of isn't even an option anymore, don't have the time to get into anything.

Same, i'll do weekend benders with games like I do netflix and just crunch through the whole thing at once.

For the most part I don't turn on my PS4 or TV on the weekdays except sports.

And you're right, once you stop it's harder to finish after time away. Been wanting to finish GTAV-Bloodbourne for years now, yet i'll just start something new instead.

Still have to play RDR2

Xbox 1 was garbage compared to the 360

Lineup of games for the ps4 is vastly way better than its direct predecessor. But not having a dedicated numbered gran turismo title in the last decade didn't make me consider it at all in its early years.

Strangely, i dont want immersion from a game. I want pure arcade gameplay. Skip the story.

Ever tried VR?

It's improved so fast, even NBA courtside in VR is bomb

I tried Resident Evil 7 in VR and was screaming like a little girl, full immersion it was almost too much.

All I know is that Xbox will dominate the next generation. Buying Zenimax was a big dick Les Grossman move.

It was OK. Been playing so long that the last few generations are starting to blend together. Too many games are now built around getting you to buy microtransactions and DLC. There's some good stuff on the Indies side ( Cuphead, Hollow knight, Dead Cells, Spelunky etc) that I find more replayable than your average AAA game. Honestly not even excited for the next gen of consoles and content to play on PC, Switch, VR and finish up my last few PS4 exclusives. I got shit like Horizon, God of War and Spider-man that I ain't even booted up yet.

Just give me a good GTA or RDR or Hitman game. Generation doesn't matter.

Main games I played on this generation were Fallout 4, Borderlands 2, Spiderman, and Overwatch...all very good games.I think I got more burn out of the 360 though with Oblivion, all the Halo games, COD, GTA etc.

PS2 era is still GOAT.

Agreed

The best games of the generation for me were (there's still couple games I want to get to) Witcher 3, Bloodborne, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Red Dead Redemption 2, Sekiro, Hollow Knight, Dying Light, Persona 5, Celeste, Nier: Automata and Doom.

I'm way too old to have any nostalgia for the PS4 lol... that in fact sounds funny to even type out.

My last system was a PS2 but favorite console was Nintendo -- I remember begging my parents to buy me the 100 games in 1 cartridge and boy was it fun.

Games like Racecar were once games you could only play at the arcade... speaking of, is nickel nickel even around anymore?

The new games dont focus enough on gameplay and strategy. Everything is focused on stupid shit like 4K, shadow rendering, gravity/physics etc. Nintendo at least still has not fully pledged towards that route.

Games in the 90's had to crank up difficulty otherwise you'd cheese through them in a couple hours. Limiting the amount of lives + continues was part of the critical element. F*ck up too many times you go back to zero, all the way back.

Today you just adjust difficulty settings if you enjoy being 1 shotted and respawning 50 times like that. But it's not necessary because games are 10-40hrs long even on Easy/Normal.

Did anyone actually get past this in TMNT? It's like the 3rd or 4th level

Strategic, nah. It's just a painfully difficult. Then your 7yo self had to replay the entire first 4 levels over n over to get back there. Kind of an unnecessary stress to artificially extend the game loop. But because games were 8-16 bit they had to be or your $60 purchase would wrap in 1-2 hours.

It's a case of graphics vs. gameplay. That's why they're still selling like hotcakes, despite the presence of powerful rivals and being in the video game industry for a long time already.

Play The Last of Us 2 on Grounded and Permadeath, doesn't matter if your 5-15 hours in. Hit once and you go back to opening credits. :rant

Survivor horror like TLOU and Resident Evil on high difficulty makes loot retarded scarce and limits your saves. Really only enjoyable for hardcore purists and speedrunners

Still stealth games like that are strategic as it gets and never really existed pre-Metal Gear Solid/Kojima

It depends on the genre

PS2 was the best gen for fighting games( DBZ,MK, Street fighter, Marvel vs Capcom)

PS3 was the best gen for online FPS (Cod 4 - BO2 era)

This was probably the best gen for action adventure games tho

Splinter Cell double agent for the 360 had great online play. Very unique H2H play imo used to love playing spy and ****ing with the mercs.

Few online experiences ever gave the satisfaction of sneaking up on one and catching them in the chokehold.

Man **** that TMNT level :oldlol:

It's a stretch even saying 2 hours for some of those games. Some were *barely* an hour.
