I attribute it partially due to Kobe's refusal to make room for the Lakers to sign other talent. Also, it seemed like no all star was willing to play with an over the hill egotistical superstar. Signing LeBron was probably the best thing to have happened to this franchise in a long time. Pre-injury, LeBron took a literaly bum roster with Lance Stephenson/Mcgee being the second best players to the 4th seed.
