View Full Version : Kobe was considered the best player in the world when Lebron was at his best

Lebron was by far at his athletic best about 10 years ago. The rules are different now, but a Lebron from 2009 would be putting up better numbers today than a 2020 Lebron. It's not even close. But Kobe was definitely considered #1 during that time period. People argued that Lebron had the stats, but Lebron never scored 81 and had all those 50 point games Kobe had.

Does that mean Kobe is better than Lebron? It doesn't mean that, Lebron has an argument for longevity and accumulated stats. But peak for peak, the 35 point per game Kobe was better than Lebron is and ever was. Lebron continues to get all these accumulated stats to add to his legacy. But peak for peak, it's Kobe all day. And even Lebron said so. He wasn't being sarcastic, he knew it and conceded it.

You know how we wish we could have seen Lebron play Jordan or Jordan play against Wilt? Well, we saw Lebron at his best against Kobe at his best. You can go to YouTube and look at how Kobe smashed Lebron game after game. Now, I know people like a book. I know they're going to say Lebron had the better record. But I'm talking about one on one. You don't need to look at stats. You don't need to debate. You just need to watch this video. It's as clear as day. The video is all you need. No debate. This isn't something where we need to wish we had seen them battle or speculate. We got to see them face off. The proof couldn't be more clear. No denial. Here is the video.

Kobe was definitely not considered the best player in the world 10 years ago. In 2009-10 it was LeBron.

That's why The Decision in 2010 was such a big deal - because LeBron was not only the best player in the league but he was potentially the greatest player of all time.

Yes, even then in 2010 a lot of people were already thinking that LeBron was the GOAT. LeBron vs MJ was already a topic in 2010. That's what the fuss was all about.

The last time Kobe was considered a better player than LeBron was probably 2006.

Did you read what I said? I already predicted you would say that. We don't need that. We have the video. Watch it.

Oh no, Kobe was definitely considered the best player in the world in 09-10. By players, coaches, and Lebron himself.

I don't think just because he made a decision, serves as any kind of proof that he was the best player. I don't remember a single person thinking Lebron was the GOAT at the time, just that he had potential. Remember not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, not 5, not 6, not 7... He certainly didn't live up the hype in Miami.

Nonetheless watch the video. Kobe was better than Lebron one on one. That isn't something that can be disputed. We have it on video.

LeBron has been considered the best player in the world by anyone with a brain since 2008-2009. Only possible exception is 2018-2019.

That's totally BS.

No he wasn't. Kobe was never the best player in the league at any time in his career or even close to it.

When lebron took over in 2009, Dwight, Wade, and Chris Paul were all better than Kobe.

Which year do you disagree with. By 2009, he was by far the best in the league it isnt even close.

Jerry West said that LeBron surpassed Kobe as early as 2008.
The only season where you could claim that Kobe was "hands down, no questions asked" better than LeBron was LeBron's rookie season.
You could probably say that for 2006-07 as well, but only the regular season, because in the playoffs LeBron led arguably the worst supporting cast ever to a finals.

I think Lebron was better by 2008. He led the league in PER, was the scoring champion, took the Celtics to 7 games with scrubs for teammates. Statistically was better than Kobe in every way. More ppg, rpg, apg, bpg, fg%.

See you guys in this thread are fans of Lebron or young or don't have the best memories. The fact of the matter is that even Lebron himself said Kobe was better. And he was not kidding. Kobe was.

I remember that time vividly. Kobe fans and Laker fans were the only ones who actually thought he was better in 08-09 or 09-10. Then post Celtics series and Decision there was some mainstream backlash.

Even if your point were true that people thought Kobe was better it doesn't make him better. Almost everyone, except for "individuals" such as yourself, thinks LeBron is way better than Kobe all time now. Yet, I'm sure you think it isn't so. So either popular opinion is the truth or it isn't. Pick one otherwise you're being inconsistent.

Lots of revisionist history going on in this thread, but not surprising considering it's infested with Bronsexuals and Kobe haters. Only on ISH was Kobe "never considered the best player in the world". Outside of ISH, in the REAL world, Kobe was widely considered the best player in the world from 2001 until he tore his achilles in 2013. LeBron threw his hat in the ring to be in the discussion for best player in the world in 2007 when he lead the Cavs to the Finals and had an all-time great performance against the Pistons, but he didn't overtake Kobe completely until Kobe was no longer Kobe.

Kobe, Best Player in the World: 2001-2013 (13 seasons)

LeBron, Best Player in the World: 2007- Present (14 seasons)

7 year overlap period (2007-2013) where you could flip a coin between Kobe/LeBron, which is why they made all those puppet commercials and people were fiending (and now regretting they never got) a Kobe vs LeBron Finals. If you don't believe me look up all the videos and quotes of every player, coach, GM, analyst etc saying that Kobe was the best in the world throughout all those years (including LeBron himself)

Even to this day players like Dirk, Iverson, TMac, Vince, etc. all say that Kobe was the best player they ever played against.
