That $5bn was not worth pissing off South Korea. Better off just selling South Korea some weapons or ships or tanks or something and work in a couple extra billion dollars in there. Then you can continue keeping watch over China from South Korea & letting China know we have tight grasp over the Korean peninsula to the north and Japan to the east. We already have Australia on our side to the south and India to the West. It wasn't worth damaging that alliance over $5bn. $5bn is pennies compared to the hundreds of billions we throw away on nonsense each year and the strategic benefit we lose over China signing deals with South Korea..
