Three seasons away averaging 1400 per season.

The only issue is, we wont have 82 game season.
He is 4146 points away, considering he averages 20 ppg for next 3 years (4146/20 = 208 games )

TheCorporation

He is pretty close already

Kareem is #1 at 38,387
LeBron is #3 at 34,241
LeBron is only 4,146 behind

If we break that up into 3 seasons (36, 37, 38) and assume he plays 71 games per season that would mean he only needs to average 19.46 per game. He will get it barring any major injuries. LeGoat lives on

4,146 behind
71 games * 3 season = 213 games
4,146 / 213 = 19.46 ppg

Good call. But I wonder if the NBA is going to make this shift the 'new' schedule and Finals are always in October now? OR are they going to try and shorten this season to correct it this year?

Phoenix

Starting the season in January means it will end in August. Early season will overlap with the NFL playoffs, but better to have that situation at the beginning than have the NBA playoffs overlap with the start of the NFL season. They may reduce the number of games to something like 70, but that means a reduction in revenue so I wouldn't bet too strongly on that.

Better question is what solutions are in place for a start in 3 months, as far as the pandemic. Nothing is going to be improved on that end to return to a normal season. And good luck getting a 8 month bubble commitment from the players.

Yeah but he has to be 100% for the playoffs. Like one of the posters said, even if he averaged 19pts for 70 games each year he would still break Kareem's record. No need to risk any injury or come to the playoffs with no energy

His scoring hasn't declined the way you would expect, partly because of how gracefully he is aging but also because the game is faster and scoring up in general. He scored the same in 2020 as he did in 2015 and 2016 (25.3 PPG). Let's assume he starts to slide, though.

23 PPG over 60 games=1,380
21 PPG over 70 games=1,470
18 PPG over 70 games=1,260
15 PPG over 70 games=1,050
Total: 5,160

That would get him to 39,581 and this assumes a fast rate of decline that is unlikely, given his history, barring injury.

Here is how KAJ's scoring went from age 35 on: 22, 22, 22, 23, 18, 15, 10. He didn't fall off the cliff until he got to his age 39 season and even then he churned out one more all-star caliber scoring season (18 in the RS, 19 in the PO).

KAJ was on a team with Magic, Worthy, and Scott. He could have scored more on a team with less firepower. The Lakers basically have only 2 scorers so they will need more from LeBron than the Lakers did from KAJ, unless things change.

Some of KAJ's decline was not being able to play the same minutes. His per 36 during that time frame was: 24, 24, 24, 25, 20, 18, 16. So his production was a lot more consistent per minute but he went from 32-33 MPG from age 35-38 to 31, 29, and 23.

This. The corona has really hurted LeBron's chance of overtaking both Malone and Abdul-Jabbar, as it seems there will be less games
in the upcoming seasons. In a parallel world without corona, he was going to get there barring injuries.

Plus 12' was a shortened season. LeBron will likely have 3 shortened seasons. Jordan, KAJ had zero (Jordan retired for the 99' lockout season). These may cost LeBron a total of about half a season's worth of games.

I expect the same shit we see every year.

Defense he played this season will not be recreated. Vogel understands that and while I dont think he will be 2019 bad. He will not be as lock down unless it's a marquee matchup toward playoffs.

He adjust his gam each season. Tough to say what he will do but we know even upcoming season hes 23-25ppg 8rpg and 9-10apg

Both the guys ahead of LeBron had elite PGs feeding them, a significant advantage to help stave off decline that LeBron doesn't have. That alone could be a reason LeBron's scoring could drop faster than theirs did once he hits a certain point.

He's coasted in the regular season starting in 2014. He'll continue that. His defense though will be dialed up in the playoffs. Only reason it was so bad 2017-19 was team defense was going to suck no matter what (crappy coaching, no rim protection, bad defenders all over the lineup) so he preserved his energy for where it would be useful on the offensive end.

Until Lebron wins 7 titles as the best player he's not better than MJ. That's the reality.

Two weeks ago right after the Lakers title Lebron won the GOAT poll on RealGM. Just a week later they put up another poll and Jordan is beating him by more than 2:1 right now. 1996 Jordan was voted over 2020 Lebron and even 1984 Bird neck and neck with 2020 Lebron. And that's just one week later. People are caught up in the moment. If Lebron retired now... then wait 5 years for the dust to settle. There will be more Lebron vs. Duncan than Lebron vs. Jordan threads on ISH. Guaranteed. He doesn't yet have the GOAT resume despite what his stans think. 6 titles with 6 FMVP makes him eye to eye and 7 will give him the edge. Anything else is nice narratives. Not many people will seriously give Lebron the GOAT title because he has more total points or any other stat for that matter.

Yeah, he was nothing like this before LeBron got to #4. :(

The "rings as the best player" thing is self-serving. Russell is the clear GOAT then--LeBron is closer to MJ than Russell is to MJ.

dankok8

And there's no problem saying Russell is the GOAT. I mean with 11 titles and at least 8 or 9 as the best player he probably is to be honest.
