It is crazy a 36 year old in his 18th season wouldn't want to resume the season after only 2 months off. Must be hgh like the OP said

They just played an accelerated full playoff schedule. It was as intense as any playoffs but also accelerated, so they had less days off between games. He'd usually get 4 months off after the finals so naturally he'd prefer something closer to that.

That's probably what will eventually happen. The commissioner might pass a rule about players having to be present, but I think you'll see a lot of guys taking games off and playing very abbreviated minutes in the early part of the season.
