I didnt wanna hijack a topic already going on with this issue but im sure some of you have strong opinions. Lets begin with the fact that the NBA is not gonna take anyone off the first 50. They just wont. They DID the first time because they had a top 25 and kicked a lot of them off for the top 50. Like 11-12 of the old guys got cut. But the NBA isnt about to disrespect the legends in this PC era. They will simply add 25 more. So.....not all these guys can make it:
Kobe
Tim Duncan
KG
Dirk
Lebron
Payton
Bob Mcadoo
Wade
Westbrook
Pierce
Durant
Bosh
Ben Wallace
Chris Webber
Steph
Nash
Kidd
Nique
Iverson
Paul
Zo
Dwight
Kyrie
Leonard
Harden
Mutombo
Giannis
Reggie Miller
Ray Allen
Mitch Richmond
Pau Gasol
Manu
Vince Carter
Carmelo
Anthony Davis
Tmac
Tony Parker
Lillard
Jokic(has actually played more seasons than Shaq did in 96...not that hes shaq)
Klay Thompson
Thats 40. Maybe you wanna include someone else....feel free. But thats 40 to start and 15 cant make it.
Give me your 15 cuts if you dont mind. Id have added Luka but they wont put him on in season 3 im sure.
Im sure like 6-7 stand out to you as no go but 15 might be tough.

Hard not to put Grant Hill at least on the list of potential guys. I may have to edit it later. Hes got a better real world chance of making that list than someone like Tony Parker or Mitch I suppose.
Id obviously add Rose as a potential guy too but with only 4 years as a star(3 really) I don’t think he’d make it when they already didn’t add Mcadoo the first time.
Derrick, Mcadoo, Bernard King, and Hill just make it tough.

If I had to remove some for top 75
Manu, Kyrie, Richmond
For top 50 it would be easier to remove more

I don't think they're gonn add past players who missed the cut the first time like McAdoo or Nique. Because, IMO if they add them they'd have to add everyone else like Dantley, King, English, Bob Lanier, etc.
They'll just do the best players post 96 on. Even guys from the late 80s/early 90s like Reggie, Mullin (who was on Dream Team and still no inclusion) and Mitch who had a career well before I don't see them making it. The only one I see is Gary Payton from that era. He actually had his coming out party the season the 50 were named.
Webber, Kidd and Hill came in after Shaq and of course didn't have a Shaq impact, they can be included.
Rose is a odd case. You can use the McAdoo MVP factor but at the same time you mention 4 (or 3 years) as a star. Earl Monroe made only 4 All-Star appearances but was a NBA at 50 member.
My 25 additional players looks like:
Payton
Kidd
Grant Hill
KG
Iverson
Ray
Nash
Kobe
Duncan
McGrady
Pierce
Dirk
LeBron
Wade
Dwight
CP3
KD
Rose
Westbrook
Harden
Steph
Kawhi
Anthony Davis
Giannis
The last spot can go to a number of players from Webber to Vince Carter to Tony Parker to Carmelo to Bosh to Ben Wallace to Klay to Dame. Can't go wrong with any of those picks really. Of those, I'd go with VINCE CARTER.

To me these are automatic:
Kobe
Tim Duncan
KG
Dirk
Lebron
Payton
Wade
Westbrook
Durant
Steph
Nash
Kidd
Iverson
Paul
Leonard
Harden
Giannis
Reggie Miller
Ray Allen
Anthony Davis
Tmac
That is 21 spots. If I think it through more maybe I would add 1-2 more to the "automatic" list but you get the point.
It gets tough after that. I would add:
Pierce
Dwight
Carter
Parker
Subject to change--these are just gut reactions at looking at names without looking at or considering their records deeply.
Even guys from the late 80s/early 90s like Reggie, Mullin (who was on Dream Team and still no inclusion) and Mitch who had a career well before I don't see them making it.
Mullin falls in the same bucket as Rose and Hill: strong peak but a lack of longevity (all there were not equal but have the same career "outline" in this sense. Miller is the opposite end of a spectrum. He had no meaningful peak (compared to basically every other player listed here or in the top 50) but he had great longevity at a borderline all-star level. Richmond was better than Miller prime vs. prime as was Dumars but at some point longevity swamps the other guy if there is not an astronomical peak difference.

In 1996-97 when they announced the top 50 players, if you said that Grant Hill and Penny Hardaway wouldn't be 100% certain additions to top 75 in 2021, you would've been called crazy.

Don't see how Carmelo makes it if Dantley isn't in. Just an overrated high scoring sf. Others did it better

Melo didn't make my list. But I didn't include any player who didn't originally make the cut (besides Payton, who's choice if different than someone like say a Reggie Miller or Chris Mullin.) All of Payton's best season came after the NBA at 50 was announced. Same can't be said for the likes of Reggie, Mullin, Richmond, etc.

I made a top 50 list like 7 years ago. I might get around to making a top 75 list. Anyways a lot of seismic shifts have occurred since then.

It's possible.

No Kobe
In the last 5 years or so, a lot of the original 50 members have passed away. Wes Unseld recently (did the NBA even mention it?), Nate Thurmond, Havlicek, Hal Greer, Bill Sharman, and for some reason feels like I'm missing someone else.

The nba is going to make a new lists. Some players who were voted in the top 35th greatest players of all time in 1981 weren't included in the top 50th greatest players of all time in 1996.

Every player from the 35th Anniversary made it.
Every player from the 25th Anniversary did not make it. That list featured only players from the 40s and 50s. Bill Russell and Sam Jones were the most recent players. Bob Davies was the only player not to make the 35th and 50th anniversary teams.
