Seemed to find success, generally everywhere he went

Starts with Houston, wins 2 rings

Goes to New Jersey, they make the playoffs for first time in a few years

Goes to Milwaukee, they have their best seasons since the 80's

Goes to Minnesota, they have the best season in franchise history

Goes to Clippers, they have the best season in franchise history

Finishes with Boston, wins a ring

Nobody turned a team around like TJ McConnell did with the Sixers.

Amen.

But TBH Cassell should put the suit away and play back up pg for the Sixers.

Would be perfect fit now TJ is commanding top dollar.

The most underrated player of all time is someone who has never made an all-star team.
Rod Strickland, Lamar Odom and Andre Miller come to mind.

The mid 90's Rockets FO should get more credit than they do.

Drafting Horry and Cassell late in the first round in consecutive drafts, leading to them contributing to back to back championships is pure genius.

Should go down as forgotten all-time draft steals.

KG must be propped up to prop up the inferior player. Cassell is sacrificial fodder used to perpetuate the illusion.

Not sure if he does qualify, really.

He joined the Nets in '97 and they went 8-15 with him. The next season they added Keith Van Horn who had a pretty good rookie season and won the 8th seed. I think the combination definitely helped, together with guys like Kendall Gill, Jayson Williams, and Kerry Kittles. But Van Horn deserves more credit. I remember that season and how well he played.

When he joined the Bucks in '99, yes they made the playoffs, but Cassell played in just 4 games. So I wouldn't attribute their playoff birth to just adding him.

Minnesota was already a 51 win team without Cassell. And they didn't just add Cassell, they also added Latrell Spreewell, who could score, defend, and play-make. So I wouldn't attribute going from 51 to 58 wins just by adding him alone.

The Clippers are an interesting case and I think that you may have a point there, but I would say their success was equally attributable to the rise of Elton Brand. Brand had his best season and not solely based on Cassell's passing. Case in point - Brand's % of FGs assist'd actually went down that season from the year prior from 64% to 60%

But compare his career to his contemporaries in his draft.

Calbert Cheney I'm lookin at you, son.

We all seen Blue Chips...

Time to revive that career, Son.

Plus you lived through Bobby Knight.

Dunno why I see Jay Williams all the time?

Is it a Duke thing?

lol...well if we want to make it relative to his draft class, then you have to consider guys like Webber, Houston, Penny, Van Exel, Rider, Mashburn, and Vin Baker. Cheney was a bust yea, but there are guys like that in every draft.

You willing to say Penny had a better career?

If I told any GM back then to pick Cassell over Penny back then they would punch me in the face.

Doesn't look so silly now huh?

When Penny was walking off the court, head down after losing the finals ....

Cassell was about to pop the cork celebrating his second ring.

Probably didn't have the better career but you can't blame them for making that pick. Injuries can't be foretold unless there is a glaring defect in the body of the player.

If we're going to go off of that then we would have to re-assess a lot of other players and how we rate them. Having said that, I think Cassell is underrated, but probably not to the level of someone like a Rod Strickland.

Cassell may have won those titles, but I'd say guys like Hakeem, Horry, Drexler, and Thorpe had a lot more to do with it.

I mean, are we really gonna say Cassell > Penny in the 1995 finals?

Penny '95 Finals: 26/5/8 on 64% TS%
Cassell '95 Finals: 14/2/3 on 63% TS%

Cassell came off the bench, but no one in their right minds would say he was the better player then.
