Tyler Herro possesses one of the finest shooting motions you’ll ever see out of an NBA prospect. But one thing you don’t notice when watching him nail triple after triple is that his arms are unusually small for a player his size.

According to Jonathan Givony of ESPN, Herro recorded the shortest wingspan measurement of any player at this year’s NBA combine. Standing at 6-foot-6 with shoes on, Herro’s wingspan topped out at 6-foot-3.

White players always measure smaller than black players on average when looking at hand size and wing span.

Wingspan is one of the most useless measurables. Wingspan won’t make a bad defender a better defender in any way. Maybe it’ll help a guy from time to time contesting/blocking a shot but it’s not making anyone a good defender. The graveyard from every draft is littered w players w giant wingspans and defensive potential.

It seems like mechanically, short arms might allow for a quicker release, which could partially compensate for the elevation deficit.

lol No...it really isn't. Having a huge wingspan relative to your size is helpful in many ways. Elton Brand was 6'8" with a monstrous 7'6" wingspan that definitely helped him play bigger than he actually was. Dwyane Wade's 6'10" wingspan helped make sure he wasn't giving up any real size to opposing guards. Scottie Pippen had a 7'3" wingspan to his 6'6" size...you don't think that length helped his defense? Citing length or size as to why someone isn't a good defensive player is always bullshit (Chris Paul is constantly the smallest guy on the court, but one of the best defensive players out there), but it also clearly helps out a lot and you'll be hard pressed to find very many all time great defensive players who weren't gifted physically as are far as length is concerned.

Ya Giannis has a huge wingspan that allows him to do great defensively.

How did Butler and Herro carry the Heat to the Finals with alligator arms?

It's a great mystery.

It also helps offensively. Exactly as the Rondo pic illustrates. But I also agree with @chocolatethunder in that it wingspan can be overvalued.

It gives literally zero insight into a guy. All of those players you mentioned aren’t good because of their wingspan. It is the most overvalued mesurable there is. I’ll take a quick guy w short arms who hustles on d all day every day over a guy with potential and a giant wingspan. LMAO sure man use three or four of the best players ever as your sample size. I’ll be over here w the 30 guys with long wingspans who are touted as having great defensive potential every draft but are total busts. Wingspan isn’t a difference maker.

Thre closer you play to the basket the more important wingspan becomes. Herro is fine because he's a shooter no one is going to regularly block his threes no matter who they are.
