"The Covid-19 vaccine being developed by Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE prevented more than 90% of infections in a study of tens of thousands of volunteers, the most encouraging scientific advance so far in the battle against the coronavirus.

Eight months into the worst pandemic in a century, the preliminary results pave the way for the companies to seek an emergency-use authorization from regulators if further research shows the shot is also safe.

Pfizer shares extended gains in premarket trading, rising about 16%, with BioNTech American depositary receipts up about 27%. The news added more than $500 billion to the value of the MSCI All Country World Index.

The findings are based on an interim analysis conducted after 94 participants, split between those who got a placebo and those who were vaccinated, contracted Covid-19. The trial will continue until 164 cases have occurred. If the data hold up and a key safety readout Pfizer expects in about a week also looks good, it could mean that the world has a vital new tool to control a pandemic that has killed more than 1.2 million people worldwide.

“This is about the best the news could possibly be for the world and for the United States and for public health,” said William Gruber, Pfizer senior vice president for vaccine clinical research and development. It was better than even the best result he had hoped for, he said.

With effectiveness for the first vaccines previously expected to be in the range of 60% to 70%, “more than 90% is extraordinary,” BioNTech Chief Executive Officer Ugur Sahin said.

COVID-19 hospitalizes at a lower rate than seasonal flu.

Plus, I'm healthy and have a functioning immune system so odds are I am of the majority who are asymptomatic upon exposure anyway.

Yeah, that 90% number needs context. A lot of context. We've seen many studies come out showing the vaccine is not as helpful in people who are vulnerable; obese people lacking functioning immune systems.

Vaccine isn't very helpful if you don't have a functioning immune system (the exact people most susceptible to this virus).

For example, the 2018 flu had roughly 810,000 hospitalizations and influenza vaccination prevented 91,000 hospitalizations. Per CDC, ~40% of adults get vaccinated and a higher % in those more vulnerable (elderly). Approx 150 million vaccinations/yr.

This means only 1 hospitalization was prevented for every 1,650 people vaccinated and it reduced overall hospitalizations by ~10% (this is probably much smaller than anyone would guess).

And this was a vaccine given before it has already swept through an entire country, infecting ~65 million so far and most will be exposed by the end of this year or next.

Biontech, the creator of the vaccine, a german firm that did not get anything by the US gov or the dems, had their vaccine in stage 3 testing for atleast 3 month now. It wasn't a secret that they're the front runner for a vaccine. Pfizer is just in the mix for mass production as Biontech doesn't have the means.
