I think in the movie.... if I recall correctly, so don't hold me to this theory,.... but Robert Downey Jr's character Paul Avery kind of spiraled out of control with drugs & alcohol because he discovered the plot was a little bit more sinister than just a supervillain nerd lurking the streets.... but rather a cult.... and these cult-like people infiltrated the newspaper he was working for, which is why he got the f*ck out of there.

The movie doesn't give this away directly... but instead it's subtle. RDJ knew it was not one person and there wasn't much he could do implicate those that were really guilty.

need to watch the movie again.... I forget how this story played out.

I actually think the Zodiac led a pretty normal but forgettable life. Probably had a wife and 9-5 job considering when he'd kill. And he showed no signs of being sadistic or enjoying the act of killing itself. The crimes were very quick.

I think he simply wanted attention and received very little recognition in his personal and professional life.
