Assuming this is the core with beautiful pieces Pelinka puts around. How long can this core compete?

Bron/AD/Trezz/Kuz/KCP/Schroder/THT/Caruso

THT got some burn in the playoff and is rumored to get a decent amount of minutes this season because of how well hes playing.

3 years because that's as long as I think LeBron will be at top 10 level.

2021 - LeBron still top 5
2022 - LeBron maybe still top 5, top 10
2023 - LeBron top 10

Might get 1 more title out of this run.

I think the current Lakers FO is elite and will have a plan for the next star post LeBron to join AD. Pelinka was smart to go younger IMMEDIATELY. Genius almost. Most GM's would never pull the trigger and go with the old guys again and fail

It's basically 2021 right now. You think next year LeBron is "maybe still top 5"? He will undoubtedly still be top 3 next year and in 2023. And likely top 1 for all three years.

The problem with that is all it takes is 1 injury. Kobe was fvcking amazing before his achille tear and then it was all over. The older he gets, the inevitable father time comes. Lets just hope that doesnt happen.

Lonzo and Ingram played very well last year. Lonzo will never be a star, but he is a solid point-guard. They are just not for now - LeBron is in win-now mode so he needs players in their prime right now. Not really an indictment on Ingram/Lonzo's skills/abilities but rather their lack of experience & not in win-now mode. They need to develop next couple years.

Lebron will continue to be good for one more year at least but then the last two years of his contract, there’s a serious chance of him becoming washed up. Players aged 38-39 may suddenly decline without any signs. Remember how good TD was in 2015 playoffs and he became completely washed up in 2016 without major injuries. You can’t win the fight against nature.

By then lebron’s contract will be one of the worst in the league like Kobe’s last 2 seasons. The Lakers FO did a nice job to resign AD for 5 years since otherwise they have to be prepared for the risk of losing AD when Lebron is washed up and costing 45M from their cap space.

Even without injuries players at 38+ years old can turn from good to washed up just suddenly without any signs. KG was still great in 2013 with the Celtics and he became washed in 2014 when he was traded to the Nets. Duncan was putting up good numbers in 2015 playoffs and he became a totally different person in 2016. No major injury happened with them, it’s just nature.

This team has 3-peat potential which would be devastating for 3ball

PF is a physical position. LeBron can run PG at 40 years old with his skill. He's a ball handler. His strengths can remain even deep in age. KG/Duncan are playing the 4/5 spot where you are going against big bodies and playing in the paint. Kinda of a big diff...

LeBron will have trade value in his last season even if he stinks up the joint. Lakers can just dump his expiring contract while in final year.

I don't fear that at all. Kobr always had various ailments and terrible knees which contributed to his achilles weakness. LeBron doesn't have those problems.

And Klobr was not amazing before his injury - his efficiency had plummeted to lows before his achilles anyway - he had only won 41 and 45 games in the two years before his achilles, etc. He was already on his way out. He was just trying to keep up his averages while his efficiency kept dropping.

Those guys were never the physical specimens that Lebron is, nor did they take care of their bodies as much. They were almost not playing at MVP level this late in their careers. Of course Lebron's performance will decline but I wouldn't use either of those guys as comparisons. Lebron doesn't really have a comp at this point.

LeGM did an excellent job assembling these pieces. Rob Pelinka is very fortunate, he literally does zero on his end, Lebron is behind every single good acquisition. Pelinka just awaits for LeBron to call him.

As long as James and AD can stay healthy and as long as James can fight off father time. Each year is going to be a challenge with James an AD taking up so much of the Lakers cap space and with so many free agents they will have each year. It looks really good this year, but next year Schoder, Trez, Mathews, Caruso, Morris, and Gasol all can become free agents.

Luckily for the Lakers, it looks like Pelinka is among the best in the business at GM.

Short answer, its cloudy after this year.

Not cloudy at all. Pelinka has set this team up for major success. Marc Gasol/KCP and future contracts will be primo for S&T for another star. Pelinka is a fvcking wizard man. Dennis will probably be our PG for the future so resigning will happen. 27 years old. Really fking good.
