I've heard it claimed that tranquilizers can help a person with an overactive mind ignore random thoughts and focus on a single subject. I knew a guy in college who was a FIDE Master who would spark one up before (and sometimes during) a match for the same reason. Magnus Carlsen (World Champion 2013-present, arguably the best player in the history of the game) plays in online Blitz Chess tournaments under the handle "DrDrunkenstein".
